What's the deal with motorway cameras?

I'm only posting this now but I've been curious about this for a while.

I can go through them at well over 80-90mph and nothing happens.

All the cars in front do it as well.

This was on the M1 but I've seen it on the M25 as well, people doing well over 70 and not getting flashed.

Do they not work, or are they only on during a specific time of day or something?

I'm genuinely curious if anyone's been flashed on the motorway, because I regularly do 100+ whenever I'm on motorways.

If you mean the over head gantry from what I have read they are only live when the matrix signs are illuminated.

Do you want to take that chance that it`s ok because you hav`nt been flashed???
Around here (Suffolk) some of the cameras have IV illumination and don`t flash in the dark if at all.
I know I have been through a camera points and have been flashed and have not received any notifications.

Best not to take the chance because the day you think it`s all ok is the day the filth will switch that particular camera on.

The SE corner of the 25 now has "stealth" cameras (still painted yellow though :p) on the side of the gantree.

I believe them to be permanently active. I've never risked speeding on the 25 though....

J24-26 M25 flash only when the variable is active.
I have cruised at 80 when it's clear with no NIP through the door but I wouldn't leave anything to chance.

It's a risk you run. I've seen a lot of overhead cameras on dual carriageways a smidgin too late, and shortly after I passed my test I would do the 2-week penance waiting for the NIP that, luckily, never arrived. If you want to work out the hows and whys, there's a website (www.speedcamerasuk.com). A lot of cameras are just there to monitor traffic flow, and others are set up by local authorities for their own reasons, and yet more are inoperative/inactive due to being a part of some trial. Just get better at spotting them and remembering their locations.

Hmm yeah, it's the overhead ones.

I mean I try not to take the piss, and try keep an eye out for them/slow down for them, but when I'm in the fast lane and a car is clearly blitzing through every single one I just start to copy them and keep my speed up through the cameras. If they're not getting flashed why would I?

I'm more wary when there's nothing in front of me testing the cameras for me, if I saw one go off at the car in front I'd hit the brakes and check my speed more carefully on that stretch.

Welp, I rarely use motorways for any length of time anyway so it's not a problem, just curious.

On the M5 around north Bristol I've looked down going a little over what I should be and nothing's ever happened. It's a tough one.

as my CRF250L with the throttle pinned right open, might on occasion get jus over 80mph on the speedo, and as my sat nav informs me that in fact we are going just under 80mph, I don't take the slightest notice of them (unless the speed restriction signs are lit anyway)
