Did you borrow NASA's slide rules and forget to take them off Imperial?

They over complicate things.
They need to do something old school, like drop it inside a big rubber ball. Once the motion has been stable for a while, it opens up and goes about it's business.

I should work for NASA.

If yesterdays live stream from the control room was anything to go by, I'm not surprised this all went tits up.

You mean kind of giant airbags like they did with beagle 2?

Nah, one they can fire a the planet and let it bounce around and stop.

Simplicity is key in space programs. Having multiple layered stages just to get the damn thing near the surface is asking for trouble.

A rubber ball being fired and it landing is one stage, fire and forget. The only hard bit then would be the extraction from the ball. This can all be perfected on earth though. The problems they have encountered are more than likely due to atmospheric/gravity issues, which are hard to replicate and need very stable and precise measurements.

Maybe make it air/gas filled and burn it after.

Dunno, but I was listening to it on the PM programme on radio 4 and the lady who was carefully monitoring the wiggly line said the antenna might be "off cock". Which probably left a bad taste in the mouth.

I think it's these retro rockets they're using.

They should stop being so hipster and use more up to date equipment.
