unfortunately i had to give up the karting due to the stresses involved and my mangled wrist.

its been nearly 8 months since i raced anything and its starting to get to me.

i find myself looking at the iRacing website and at Steering wheels on Amazon.

anyone participate in this sort of thing ?
is it likely to fill a void or is it just not racing ?

I loved karting, I used to own an old 100cc 2 stroke in the 90's.
Nothing really hit that spot once I gave it up, but let me know if this iracing turns out to be a void filler.

I don't like online racing sims. You either get a group of people, that like racing and drive properly, or you get a bunch of idiots crashing each other every single corner, not giving a feck.

I tried the iRacing (1.0v) a few years back, it was alright, I guess. I used the GranTurismo 4 steering wheel (Logitech?) and I had some fun playing it, but as mentioned earlier, crashing idiots happen.

Next online racing game I can remember liking, was the Auto Club Revolution (ACR). Not as simulation focused, good selectrion of track and cars, free to play, with mods/tuning of the cars for virtual money you got for winning races. I'm not sure the game is still on, last time I checked the servers were down for maintenance or game data updates. It felt like Gran Turismo ''online''.

Tackmania Nations used to be awesome, I was ranked 4th in GB at one point.

That all went to shit once they released Trackmania Forever though.

I used to make tracks on Nations too, it has an ace track builder.
Some of mine are used on servers to this day.

up until march this year I was racing in the Rotax 177 class at forest edge. it was my third season and i was really getting into it...
lost a ton of weight, was running 3 times a week and all was going well.
Lap times where constantly improving and id just got to the point where i was able to race in anger for a whole race weekend with out keeling over with a heart attack.

only trouble is i broke my wrist when i was young and all the strain associated with loading the car/trailer, lifting kart on and off trolley and also the racing meant my wrist would swell up for a week after each race weekend.

went to doctors and hospital and its only a matter of time until hey fuse the wrist and its now only about preservation.

everything kart related was on ebay the next day.

while i keep looking at this iRacing i just cant see it being a suitable replacement.

2 stroke Kart racing is very physical and demanding on your limbs, so yeah you have to be pretty fit to race. I gave up soon after someone went into the back of me and hit me hard in the middle of my back. I'm recovered now, but it took ages and meant I had to stop racing.

Shame though, I do still keep looking at the Rotax 125cc Karts that crop up for sale and think to myself how I'd love to own one.

I probably wont.

I used to play LFS (Live For Speed) online, it didn't require a hugely powerful rig to run it and there were rarely any idiots in the races. It was good fun.
There's a free demo here:
https://www.lfs.net/

I used to have a 100cc kart and then a Rotax Max (going back 10~15 years now!), I plan on buying my son a cadet kart in a couple of years and hopefully getting him into some low-level racing.

Also used to play LFS and really enjoyed it.

Would like to have a setup to do more, but alas not enough time as it is, never mind computer games Sad.

Oh and... motorbike racing if done correctly should have little pressure on the wrist.

Definitely find karts (only done arrive and drive) worse for it.

Minimoto even less pressure on the wrists.

One of my mates got quite into the sims at one point, we used to play rFactor (1) quite a lot and the physics on the kind of cars we drove in anger when we were younger were absolutely spot on in the game.

I wasn't overly impressed with the Logitech G27 that he bought for a second rig, the Fanatech he had was light-years in front with strong feedback that actually gives a bit of fight. Plastic pedals are a bit shit with the Fanatech, metal pedals are a lot better but spendy.

I'm sure everything has moved on in the last few years and the graphics of rFactor were quite poor even for the time but it's the closest I've ever felt to driving an actual car in a game.

Yep, I'm a 'sim racer'. In terms of wheels it's between the Fanatec Clubsport and Thrustmaster T300 or TX (the T300 has Playstation compatibility and the TX Xbox). TM is cheaper and both use brushless motors. I wouldn't bother with Logitech wheels as they're old gear driven units.

I mainly play Assetto Corsa, with all the DLC (including the upcoming Porsche season pass) it comes in under £60, £22.99 on its own I think and £30 with a few bits of DLC (which are worth getting).

iRacing's very similar but is a subscription service, where beyond base content every car and track is DLC. It costs a fortune to get anywhere in the game, some people have spunked over a grand on this thing Confused

LFS is dated and stuck in development hell with devs that don't care about it anymore. rFactor 2 is also dated (DX9) and has just been sold to another company who are going to update it to DX11.

Raceroom's worth a try, it's free to play and you can test out content before you buy. DX9 but they've done an amazing job on the graphics and sounds. Physics aren't quite up there but it's an enjoyable title.
