Hi folks,
Im new to this forum so hopefully you can direct me on the issue I'm having.

My kawasaki ninja zx6r 2008 recently stopped starting up. I assumed the battery was dead so i put it on trickle charger over night, but it still didn't start. The battery was pretty old so i bought a new motobatt battery. Bike started first time no problems, however i noticed that the indicators would stop flashing and would just stay on. Also noted that when full beam is on indicators would stop flashing. Im assuming the extra current drawn to the light meant that the battery couldn't provide enough current to keep it flashing on and off. A few days later I measured the voltage on the battery and it dropped down to 10 V. Not surprisingly, I found myself in a similar scenario where the bike wouldn't start.

I spoke to the kawasaki dealers and they mentioned that the battery should rise up to 14 V when the bike is on, however a voltmeter reading showed that the battery stayed at 12 V. Therefore i believe that the bike isn't charging the battery but I'm not sure for certain. It could be that I was sent a dud motobatt.

I left my old battery on trickle charger for three days and it gave a voltage of 12 V. Replaced the motobatt with the old battery and it started up fine. Noticed that again the battery voltage remained at 12 V when the bike is on. Also had the same issue with the indicators and beam light.

Id appreciate any help in trying to solve this issue. Any further diagnostics I could do to isolate the problem would be much appreciated too.

Cheers and happy riding!

This is true with the engine revving up to 5,000rpm even with a suspect battery.
I would check the connections in and out of the reg/rec first.

Thanks for your reply. Finally had a chance to look at this issue. It seems that the regulator/rectifier connection are ok. Just to check Ive managed to put a new regulator and rectifier and it still operates at 12 V @ 5000 rpm.

Thought?

After acknowledging my advice you should have checked the stator / alternator output.

Hi, So I checked the alternator and Im getting 42 V at 4000rpm and the resistance is zero when bike is turned off. Does this mean that the stator is working?

Slightly confused because if this is the case that means the stator and voltage regulator is working but Im not getting the charging required. Could it be the alternator rotor or have the magnets become weak.

Thanks

What are your 3 readings from the alternator?
