There I am looking to sort out a minor leak from a gasket and things are NEVER straight forward.

I have made gaskets out of old cereal boxes in the past, but that was on old CZ`s and the like.
On my normal (Japanese) bikes, I have always just bought a set from the supplier.
I have never really taken much notice of what they are made of or any specific requirements of a gasket.

So now I want to make my own out of proper gasket paper, I need to know what I should be asking for?
I know to ask for oil/water suitable material.

But I seek the wisdom of the mighty BCF : what exactly should I ask for?

Which gasket are we talking about?

Unless they are also shimming a bearing clearance, I see no reason not to continue to use cornflakes packet in the majority of cases.

I use 1 or 2 mm general gasket sheet depending on what I am fixing. However that's mainly because it was 1 and 2mm gasket sheeting that fell into my suitcase when I came home from my ship, more than once. Whistle

In reality though, that will fulfil 99% of repairs. Others are usually specialist gaskets like cylinder heads.

Thanks peoples Thumbs Up

After a bit of local research and what was said on here, I found a local motor factors that had an old boy behind the counter.
He knew what I needed and I came away with two large sheets of 1mm and a tube of paste for less than a tenner.

I have enough gasket paper for a few years yet and enough smear as well.
Pepperami is pleased Smile

I went out earlier this afternoon and one supplier said he only sold metre square sheets at £42 a sheet Shocked (robbing bastard)

It`s the clutch cover, not under a lot of strain and no critical tolerances involved Thumbs Up
However the bike is still in it`s shiny and new stage, so using a cornflake packet at this time would be a last resort.

My beer box cardboard gasket is beginning to seep, lasted a fair while but I think it's time for the real stuff.
Just ordered from the Amazon link above. Thumbs Up

You did well because proper gasket sheet is silly money, as shown by your other source, He wasn't ripping you off.

To get more inquisitive, what exactly to they do to paper in gaskets to make it more suitable for the application?

I presume they coat the paper in some form of oil resistant coating or apply a rubberised surface to it? How do they make MLS gaskets, and what do they use in the sandwich? Silicone, rubber or paper?

It's the fibre construction. The more things it is resistant to the more expensive. Prices for heat resistant gaskets (+350 centigrade and over) went up horrendously when they restricted the use of asbestos. Of course it's treated not to absorb the contained fluid and the compression of the sealing faces obviously help there as well.

Tombo 1000 is brilliant stuff but absolute stupid money. We used to buy it in 1m x 2m sheets for a couple of hundred dollars a sheet but that could be used on temperatures between -160c and +550c and just about any fluid.

If you are serious about making gaskets get a hole punch set and some seriously sharp cutters or scissors. You need the smoothest cuts possible on the inside as any knick or cut into the sealing material is a weak point.

I wouldn't have thought the clutch cover would need all that. I made a flange seal for a 15 bar pump the other day using a half blunted Stanley knife and it held just fine.

If in doubt, Loctite flange sealant.

I'm a bit anal like that. It comes from sailing on the same ship for years, /i hate doing the same job over.

Tee hee, 'flange'! I used some really good quality, slightly too thick but awesome quality gasket sheet last time I made up gaskets. It was cheap too, Amazon or eBay; I forget (can dig it up if anyone cares). I screwed up a very bit that ran around a bolt, but as I was impatient (terrible character trait) I bodged the crap out of it with the aforementioned Loctite flange tickler. Still holds oil months later. Admittedly it was on the Jinlun which was needed for work at the time (would never dare do such a thing with the beloved Ducati), but still...
