While cleaning the bike over the weekend I noticed one of the dust covers on my fz6 forks has blown slightly and the metal inside has gone rusty.

Is this something I need to look at urgently or is it not likely to cause a problem until the dust cover is completely compromised?

The bike is due for a service so I could get it done at the same time. Speaking of which any body know of a good MC garage in the Slough/Maidenhead area. I used to use Berkshire motorcycles but my last visit put me off. The guy that used to run it has moved on and the young lad that took it over when it moved did not seem to give a toss about trying to help his customers. Shame really as they were always good before that.

The snap rings on my SV forks were fucked and worn through my dust seals round the edges for at least the last 10k miles until I stuck some new ones on at the weekend.

Absolutely no problems, fork still holds oil, not even mentioned on the MOT even though the anal cunt picked up on every other little thing he could find to make it look like I ride a junker.

Haynes and DIY you mug.

Yeah I want to do more stuff on my bike but [insert excuse from: no tools, no workshop, no know how, girly hands, no time.]

It looks like I would need to take the wheel off and forks out to do it and I have no jacks or 19mm hex to get the wheel off. I would enjoy doing it but once I have sourced all the things I need I might as well pay someone.

Thanks for the info tom_e I am safe leaving it for a while by the sounds of it.

You could purchase all the tools required including a Haynes for a third of the price a garage would charge you.

There's no reason to worry about it at all unless and until it seeps fork oil. At that time, when the fork seals and dust seals are being replaced, a bit of sandpaper will be enough to recondition the inside of the fork leg and the circlip.

I know the guy you're talking about. He knows what he's doing as a mechanic, but his thing was/is sales. He was a pretty good salesman for Berkshire Motorcycles before the internet killed off their bike sales business. Nowadays, they mostly fix teenagers' trainwreck peds and 125s. But they still have all the tools. Unless there's something you're really worried about on your FZ6, I wouldn't worry, just make sure you specify exactly what you want him to do, and check it over when you get it back. For example, 'change the coolant', 'replace the oil filter', etc. Can't go wrong with that.

If your bike needs servicing and you have misgivings, just take it in for a dealer service. Alternatively, contact a member of this forum called Val. He can recommend many good mechanics.
