Is this something I need to look at urgently or is it not likely to cause a problem until the dust cover is completely compromised? |
There's no reason to worry about it at all unless and until it seeps fork oil. At that time, when the fork seals and dust seals are being replaced, a bit of sandpaper will be enough to recondition the inside of the fork leg and the circlip.

I used to use Berkshire motorcycles but my last visit put me off. The guy that used to run it has moved on and the young lad that took it over when it moved did not seem to give a toss about trying to help his customers. Shame really as they were always good before that. |
I know the guy you're talking about. He knows what he's doing as a mechanic, but his thing was/is sales. He was a pretty good salesman for Berkshire Motorcycles before the internet killed off their bike sales business. Nowadays, they mostly fix teenagers' trainwreck peds and 125s. But they still have all the tools. Unless there's something you're really worried about on your FZ6, I wouldn't worry, just make sure you specify exactly what you want him to do, and check it over when you get it back. For example, 'change the coolant', 'replace the oil filter', etc. Can't go wrong with that.
If your bike needs servicing and you have misgivings, just take it in for a dealer service. Alternatively, contact a member of this forum called Val. He can recommend many good mechanics. ____________________ Safety in numbers |
