https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37853386 Some strange comments from Fatma Samba Diouf Samoura (Fifa general secretary).

“Britain is not the only country that has been suffering from the result of war.”

“Syria is an example. My own continent has been torn by war for years.”

Eh?

I would have thought they'd be keeping a low profile after recent events.

They are right, the poppy isn't just a charity thing. It is a political statement, and is worn to make a point.

It is entirely possible to donate to the RBL without wearing a poppy, wearing the poppy simply helps you to tell people you donated, and what you choose to support.

I have a metal poppy pin badge, bought it about four years ago. Still ban football though.

THIS country would only be in THEIR opinion. It wouldn't be the original intention.

I don't like how more recent conflicts have muscled in (Iraq, Afghanistan) on the poppy, but it's a sign of respect/remembrance. I've no idea what point Fifa are trying to make, referring to an ongoing conflict or the mess that's Africa. It's disrespectful and the English/Scottish FA are going the right thing by ignoring them Thumbs Up

What I can't work out is why it's only just dawned on those in the organisation of the game.

If it was that important, the date should have rung a bell, and you'd have thought the issue of whether it is / isn't a political symbol or the like would have been tackled some months ago, as in when the fixture list was announced.

Why the late hubbub and furore?

What on earth are you trying to say?

That the poppy isn't a symbol of solely the personnel that gave their lives for THIS country; it is also a symbol of the personnel that died trying to take it.

The origins of the poppy as a symbol predate the Nazi party's existence.

Fifa changing their mind basically. A few years ago (2010 I think) this issue came up, and the armband was a compromise, rather than having a poppy on the shirt. Now they're making a stand for some reason.

Ah I see; I've just seen on the news that they're 'taking a stand' against the Easter Rising thingy as well. Must not have enough corruption claims to fight off at the moment, things a bit slow.

So even less political then as it spans many nations?

I think FIFA are stretching the definition of "political" icons on shirts, when they're quite happy for anti-racism slogans, which are surely more political than a Remembrance Poppy?

Exactly that; it isn't a political symbol. It is often used politically - ie Jeremy Corbyn's half-bow outrage of last year - but that's not to say that the symbol itself is in any way political.

Either your sarcasm is awesome, or you missed the point (rarely happens), can never quite tell with you at a times Laughing

My point wasn't that it's a statement about war. It's a public statement about what your believe and support. I fully support the RBL, and do donate.

But I find wearing the poppy to be a little bit of self gratification. How they walk around displaying to everybody the fact that they donated.

And then you get the people who share the photos of poppies on Facebook, yet probably have never donated in their lives.

The wearing, and display of the poppy is nothing more than to show people how rememberingest you are. And so many choose to berate those who do not without any idea of whether they have donated or their opinions.

Ah, I was overly verbose. I meant to say "Fuck FIFA".

I want to see red poppies, white poppies, gold stars, ISIS flags, swastikas tattooed on foreheads. Competitive sportsball is a proxy for tribal violence, let's get it all out in the open.
