Hi everyone,

So after much deliberation I decided to go against the grain and go for a boat anchor type chain (16mm, 2m long, £25!) instead of an Almax or Pragmasis - I'll go for one of those when I get myself a bigger bike.

I have the issue of finding a decent padlock to lock the ends of the chain together now so would highly appreciate some advice.

1 - Which padlock do you guys recommend that would fit my chain, budget around £30

2 - Shall I go for an alarmed padlock? Or nah? I already have an alarmed disk lock

3 - I might as well ask even though probably a stupid question, does anyone know where I can get a sleeve for my chain, purely for cosmetic purposes and ease of handling?

Thanks a lot guys!

I use a small U-lock with my big chain. Can be locked through a disc or the rear sprocket.

Thread the chain through an old bicycle inner tube.

Any idea which lock it is? Perhaps a link to a similar one?

Had it for 20 years now.

It's an abus of some sort but probably obsolete.

It has resisted three cropper attacks. You can see the marks on the shackle.

A Squire SS65CS Stronghold seemed to be the conclusion from your other thread about chains and padlocks, they fit very neatly to the ends of Almax chains so if it will fit your boat anchor chain then go for one of those. Thumbs Up

You ask for advice, hear the recommendations, understand what you're being told, relate those recommendations to your personal circumstances, deliberate and then make a decision. Well, that's how a person makes an informed decision.

I learn a lot from the forum, I enjoy reading others' experiences and advice, and do take the points on board - whether I go out and immediately apply the advice is my business really. No point getting pissy about it.

Just checked that thread - I completely forgot I spoke about locks too. I should have just updated that instead of creating a new one Doh!

Thanks for that Thumbs Up

Better than nothing as long as you're aware that a mooring chain won't be hardened against bolt croppers, etc.

Give the company a call, usually they are cheaper if you order direct rather than through ebay

Really? I know it's not tempered but I was under the assumption as it's 16mm bolt croppers won't be getting through them? Well that's what the company claimed anyway Liar definitely better than a smaller chain I guess Thumbs Up

Why would a boat anchor chain be hardened so as to be bolt cutter proof? Laughing

What company did you get it from?

Yeah I know it's not been hardened but think maybe it was the size that would help - but obv not!

The ebay link is above and I've attached a picture of the chain to my first post in the thread. It's quite heavy duty so I'm happy with what I paid for it but like I said, I'd probably use this until I get a bigger/better bike.. Then will up my budget on security for obvious reasons

Hardened or not, that's probably big enough to put people off unless they've got power tools or some massive bolt croppers. Laughing

For extra security, park next to more desirable bike than yours that's locked up with a shitty chain.

I've got a huge set of croppers at work, hardened or not they would not go around a 16mm chain in such a way that you could crop it. The links are simply too big to get a good purchase.

On the other hand if you could hold the chain steady a hacksaw would go through it swiftly and quietly enough. I doubt this would be an issue in reality.

In fairness, I'd give that stuff 5 minutes with a hacksaw.

I don't use motorcycle specific chain. I use a bit of 16mm grade 80 load chain. You can't crop that. Still got my bike nicked when they used a hydraulic shear to cut it.

ALL chains can be cut, otherwise they couldn't sell short bits.

I did something similar and went for a a CISA 75 off of a recommendation of a member on here (sickpup).

https://www.cisapadlocks.com/cisa-285-75-container-padlock-101-p.asp

My chain was a bit smaller than yours, so I think you'd need the CISA 84 or the CISA 85. Got mine off of eBay years ago, and gave the chain and padlock away with an old bike when I bought my Almax.

I would imagine it looks like a chain with an orange sleeve on.
