You can still upgrade to windows 10 free here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade

You don't 'need' to meet the criteria, just click upgrade and off you go.

Thank me later.

It's fine if you turn off the invasive bullshit, which is easy enough.

Also, there's going to be a time when your Windows 7 will be unsupported.

There is much hate for Windows 10 but it runs perfectly fine for me.
Some people just like to moan for the sake of it.

..because I'm sorting a friend's laptop that's currently on Windows 8, and it's a good opportunity.

It has a handy little yes/no after install.

Just no the obvious 'Would you like to send' stuff.

There is a bit more you can do, but that covers the main problems people have with it.

I have a major beef when the firm in question repeatedly asks me if I'd like the free update and then overrides my wishes and installs it regardless.
That and the inability to disable the built in monitoring features but, hey, if George Orwell's '1980' floats your boat then I'm happy for you.

You sir have earned a rare thumbs down from me Folded arms

Win7 will be supported, as a lot of companies/businesses use it. Windows 10's utter, utter, utter crap. The amount of system crashes and re-installs required's a joke. Who's had to reinstall Win 7? Who's ever had to reinstall any OS since Win98?

Thumbs down what you want my man.
I am only pointing people in the right direction if they want to it.
There is no part of my post that says that you all need to go and upgrade.

The point about businesses using win7 is moot, more businesses used XP and they dropped that.

I've yet to have windows 10 crash on me at all, and I have had it since release, so no reason here to reinstall anything.

Apart from that there have been plenty of fixes since release that make it more stable for the rogue machines.

Like I said, some people moan.

The thing's MS are giving away Windows 10 for free, people are still paying for Win7. Why would you drop support for an O/S people are actually buying?

A friend has had to re-install twice so far, I had an issue with the Windows store which launched once, and wouldn't again no matter what I tired. Eventually the anniversary update fixed that, but generally I just don't like it, for me there isn't enough (yet) to warrant upgrading from a more stable and user friendly O/S (Win7).

I feel bad about the thumbs down now, have a Thumbs Up Smile

Win10 was a free upgrade, they are charging for it now.
Which was the sole purpose of my post. Y'know to save anyone from spending monies they don't need to.

My laptop seems to shit itsself whenever I try to upgrade, so count me out. It'll be in the bin in a few years anyway, so meh.

I doubt anyone would, most people only upgraded because it was free.

I was very dubious about upgrading to 10 but I've found it to be really good and very reliable. Very happy with it and found no incompatibility issues at all.

Me. Multiple times and it takes fucking ages. Had to do it enough times to have invested the time and effort cloning the hard drives so I can get the fucking things back up more quickly.

A skype update broke two of them on the same day.

The update software is constantly falling over. There are 6 Windows 7 PCs at my work, vanilla Dell desktops of varying models, completely as they came out of the box with clean installs and only the usual third party software (firefox, adobe and open office). None of them will now sucessfully update. This is fine because it almost certainly means they are also now unable to auto upgrade.

ALL windows OS are shit. They ALL get progressively slower and more broken the longer they are installed.

Our three remaining XP machines take so long to startup now they are barely useable, despite nothing having changed in terms of what they are being asked to do (ie startup and open a remote desktop window that connects to the server via a VPN, that's ALL they do, just a glorified monitor). They've had any unecessary software like web browsers, or office software purged from them long ago to stop people using them for non-work related stuff (there are other PCs they can use for this). I timed one the other day. It takes it 10 full minutes to open the remote window from switch on.

Why wouldn't you system restore to before the update? Confused

I don't agree with that. The front room PC is a 12yr old system running XP and it boots up/runs quickly, because its never routinely had programs installed/uninstalled, or had the hard drive filled up with funny pictures of cats.

Those Dell workstations are hideous pieces of kit.

Reinstalled Windows 8 enough times that I knew the product key off the top of my head. Mr. Green

PRESUME this will NOT work with a Win XP machine? but would love to be told it will.

Have put Win10 on two Win7 machines and I have to say minimal problems - apart from MS mucking up the settings when they did the Anniversary Update.

You lot are rubbish Folded arms I've never had to do a re-install on a Win7 or XP system. There's normally a fix for any issue, if you don't know what you're doing reinstalling's easier Wink

Insert recovery disk and choose repair option, or go to the command line and use your skills to fix windows from there.

There is little you cant fix from those two options.
