To be fair, in the old days, before the online markets, there was less complete knowledge about the market, so you could still pick up a bike on the grapevine from a friend's friend at a bargain price. Also, there might still be a 'barn find' scene, with its romantic ideal of finding a rusted but mostly intact classic bike in, literally, a disused barn, owned by a disinterested but kindly old rustic who's willing to let you have it for peanuts, seeing how much you love the bike, after you've both shared fond anecdotes and memories of yesteryear. Then, getting it home in a friend's van, having a dozen tricks (that all work) to unseize everything, rewiring, cleaning it up and getting it working again.
I've yet to see it happen in real life as opposed to on TV, but if you're really clued up, I'm sure it must be possible. I assume that to the OP, money is no object when it comes to finding the right bike. However, finding the right bike in need of restoration, and the amount of work and difficulty involved, may convince him that a pipe dream is more palatable than disappointment. ____________________ Safety in numbers |

Stafford Bike show.
Go early with a van and a wad of chash. Start with the carpark.
You just missed this years one.
Consider a trophy instead. Practically the same bike but marginally less over-inflated prices. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |

I quite like the VMCC, though I'm not a member
anyway, think I shall buy a raffle ticket to (not a snowballs chance in hell ) try and win a 1961 Velocette Venom 500cc
https://www.vmccshop.net/c/582/raffle-bike
won't win of course, just like I never win the national motorcycle museum raffle |

Why the fuck would someone pay thousands for a bike
you rarely if ever ride or leave outside when you
could get a vastly superior modern machine for the same money?
Am I the only old fart who doesn't get all misty eyed and nostalgic for the shite bikes
(compared to modern ones) we had back then?
Most were Unreliable oil dropping gas guzzlers with shit brakes and handling
not to mention piss poor electrics.
Nowadays most old brit iron is worshipped by folk who will spend ££££s
and do anything but get on and ride the fuckers.
I'd love a 'classic' if it was given to me mind you
and ride it into the ground just to watch the turd polishers cry |
Totally disagree, they are good bikes and my Dad's Trophy is some of the most fun I've had on 2 wheels.
He rides his more than he rides his modern bike. He's put several thousand miles on his in the last few years.
The handling on them is actually very good I think. I'm sure anyone who has actually ridden one will agree, the weight is low and there is a very positive feel from it. I have total confidence riding quickly on it through bends.
The brakes are shit, can't argue that one, they are awful. But you don't ride these bikes how you ride a modern bike. You just leave a bit more time for everything.
The gearbox is not a patch on something modern, aside from being on the wrong side you can't bang up and down like you do on a modern bike you have to take your time with it.
The electrics aren't bad there's not much there. I replaced the stator and Zenner with modern lucas ones for about £150. It's been perfect since.
UNreliable possibly but if you have a well sorted one it isn't once if goes well, keep on top of any maintenance and it will be OK. after I finally sorted Dads one it hasn't left in stranded.
Yes then might drop a bit of oil but they shouldn't drink too much if it does it needs work.
They are a joy to work on as nothing is difficult to get at, the only minor annoyance is you need dodgy imperial tools to get at them.
I don't think parts are dear at all. Take a look, far cheaper than modern stuff.
https://www.feked.com/
The only issue is something bits are hard to fine and aren't made new Try finding a rear brake pedal.
It is a great bike and will turn far more heads that the latest Jap offering full of R's.
The prices are however ridiculous, I think my dad got his about 8 years ago and paid £2200 for it, not it must be worth 3 times that. ____________________ Well, you know what they say. If you want to save the world, you have to push a few old ladies down the stairs.
Skudd:- Perhaps she just thinks you are a window licker and is being nice just in case she becomes another Jill Dando.
WANTED:- Fujinon (Fuji) M42 (Screw on) lenses, let me know if you have anything. |
