Right ESA payday time... And the next thing on the purchase list for getting on the road is a Helmet.

And damn its a hard thing to choose.

General colour I want is Matt Black...

Modular or not modular? I admit I like the design of modular helmets. But dad says DONT GET THEM!!!! I'm sure many of you would agree with him. But dont they go through all the same safety tests?

https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_rev/100539

I like this one, but while MT is listed on sharp and they generally have a good safety rating. This helmets not listed, and its expensive :/ I would say this is at the very limit of what I can afford.

I also like the idea of internal shades, thats good too... As long as they dont fall down in the night.

The other end of the spectrum is https://www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Optimus-Front-Motorcycle-Helmet/dp/B00ZYBSQIS/ref=pd_vtph_200_tr_t_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=6C6BMPPJRW6F9KNY27KS

Sharp doesnt even know the company so great start there...

In truth Im not that bothered with having a normal full face helmet. I'm just finding it hard to find and pick a good one with a good safty rating and good price.

Can anyone help guide me towards a good purchase?

Safety rating - https://sharp.direct.gov.uk/testsratings/box-bx1

Safety rating, price, colour blah blah etc etc.... All pointless places to start!

Go to a shop. Find the helmets that fit properly - helmets have a shape as well as a size. These helmets are your short list.

+1 for the Box BX1 as a great helmet for the price - but c_dug is spot on. Whatever helmet you buy has got to fit!

Bought the other half BOX BX1 helmet, she's a pillion but doesn't play out very often.

Bought it at Halfords for £45. Seems like a great helmet, looks great, fits well, cheap.

+1 for actually trying the helmet out, that's the only reason I bought it at Halfords.

Ye find a bike shop and try a bunch of lids on, ask the sales rep there to show you how to see if it fits correctly too, dont get suckered into buying anything you dont want to.

All of them have different fits and shapes so try and find what suits you, sometimes in the bike shops as well they will match a price you find online and be pretty decent about it. Sometimes.

£45 for a helmet that has a high safety rating does make me wonder why I paid £400 for an Arai, but then I remember that no pro riders/drivers use low priced helmets and it makes me feel better.

*inb4 pro's get given helmets.

Just been out to treat myself to a new lid today and ended up with a Shoei GT Air. I went with the intention of getting a Schuberth S2 Sport but in the end the fit just wasn't for me. I have a well armoured skull so lids are always a right faff to get right.

Moral of my cool story? Try lots on, in the end it's what keeps your head not dead so make sure the fit is right for you. Cheap is fine, if it fits properly. The most ludicrously expensive lid with awesome custom grafix and shizzle may be the dogs danglies but if your noggin isn't perfect in it, there's no point wearing it.

Walk around the shop for a good 30 minutes with a lid on to get a proper feel for it. There's nothing worse than throwing your money down and running off only to find 20 minutes into your first ride with it on finding there's a nasty pressure point that gives you a headache. Or worse, it actually flops around on your head meaning it would be useless in a crash.

Ten penneth; take or leave.

I've got a flip front lid, I commute in and out of central London and in this weather being able to rid with the front up is a godsend.

I have a HJC CS-14 in matt black, I think it has a 3 star SHARP rating, not the best but not the worst and it was a reasonable £69 a couple years ago.

Actually in a round about way it is... This money is to help me get back into work by providing me with transport in a rural area.

While my ESA is actually for mental health issues, and all this stuff im doing getting back out there, building a dash doing mechanical stuff is actually therapeutic...

Best budget one i've had so far is a Viper RS44. I would buy another when my current helmet kicks the bucket but they're very hard to get hold of anymore, especially matt black. (No flip or internal visor either).

Nitro F341 might be of interest (flip and internal visor).

Personally i'd probably be looking towards Viper or Nitro when I next need a new one, but as people have mentioned getting the correct fit is the big thing and its hard to always be sure of that if you're buying online as you probably would be for those - check the returns policies closely.

Sharp only has 3 stars for nitro and its got some poor impact protection from the graph :/ But I will try a few on at the shop. Ill try the box first as halfords does have them in stock... And ill try a few others too.

If you want best value for money try Mt helmets.

It is Spanish one of the biggest helmet manufacturers in the world.

See I had the CS-12 for about 6 months until the forehead vent spring popped out whilst riding and the visor mechanism dropped a plastic grub screw and the visor started flying open in the wind on shoulder checks. It was also a bit low rent internally in terms of the materials used and got scratchy and sweaty pretty quickly. It was also ~1500g which for a helmet with no features whatsoever wasn't exactly impressive.

Swapped to a Shoei XR1000 which I still have, some 6 years on. Nothing's gone wrong with it. It's light at 1350g, the materials aren't scratchy, it's better ventilated and has a wider aperture which feels less claustraphobic.

I've just bought a Shoei Quest which, apart from a bit of weight gain, is an improvement again over the XR.

I wouldn't go budget on lids now, for reasons of comfort and build quality rather than any perceived safety.

My daughter has one of these - Four Star rating, nice fit, and paid about £35 quid for it IIRC!

My only issue that I found was that getting the visor on and off was a bit of a fiddle. Probably just my fat clumsy fingers!

Find out where they are.

Price of a bash hat is secondary to it's fit. You'd be wasting money buying a Shoei that doesn't fit compared to a cheap/mid price helmet that does fit correctly.
Certain models within a manufacturers range even fit differently.
If you find the perfect fit but it's a bit too expensive then you can search on line for a better deal and go back to the shop if you can't find the deal.
I'm not sure I'd be happy with a cheap flip front helmet but I use (what I consider to be) a mid-priced Caberg Duke and I'm very happy with it except it's very noisy above 60mph.
At the shop you can check the feel of how well they lock and how sturdy they feel.

Try lots and lots of helmets on cos you want to find the one which fits you the best, don't just try a couple on before deciding 'yeah this one fits fine'.

If a £45 Lidl lid fits you better than a £400 Arai one then the Lidl lid would protect you better in a crash.
