I'm pretty sure the talking lap(s) and timed lap are not one and the same.

Doesn't really matter who the driver is, so long as they're the same throughout the show - IMO a fair comparison is what counts the most. The biggest difference is surely the drivers knowledge of the track, arguably the same car would have a better chance of a top time at the end of season 3 compared to the beginning of season 1.

It doesn't take long to learn a short track like that, maybe something like the original Nurburgring or Isle of Man TT course then yes Smile

I wonder if Clarkson was being serious when he said they insisted the driver had to be an American? That would narrow the choices somewhat (being filmed in the U.K. etc.).

why didn't they just get some random proper drivers?

I know, who is this Mike Skinner guy? It's like they picked him up off The Streets

The car bits themselves are ok, as is the news section, but the "drama" sections seem to be getting worse with each episode.

Bloody hell, that second episode, what was it all about? Dragged on for days.

Maybe some of the problem is that they've been given carte blanche, they can just do what they want, but it's not remotely funny nor endearing. Mind you they had plenty of money to play with before, and that wasn't right funny in the end either.

I think if they were restricted in some way then they'd have to think of something fun to get round it. I've gone right off 'em I 'ave and that was the nail in the coffin for me. I remember an old TG episode where they souped up an old Lada by giving it to Lotus and the bloke that wrote the book on twin cam tuning, that seemed like fun (and the start of fun top gear), but that high budget anti terrorist thing they did, what the hell was that? Really, what the flying fuck are they doing? Trying their best to make that audi interesting? Well actually, I suppose they had their work cut out, maybe I'll give them another chance.

But back to the Lada, after they did that it left a kind of "What crazy antics are they gonna get up to next week?" feeling and it's gradually worn off. Now with all this money they have few ideas, and any ideas they do have get hammed up tae feck.

Oh and the anti-celeb thing, if they do another running joke about it (they will), it'll be almost as bad as them just interviewing the fuckers. They are sat at Chris Evans level of annoyance for me right now, well maybe not, but nearly.

They aimed for the lowest common denominator, and missed by several feet to the south.

The lada was boring, people widely considered it boring, and the result wasn't all that. Pistonheads had a meltdown about how boring that feature was.

Having spent a large part of my childhood being sick in the back of a Lada (mainly due to way my dad drove it), I found it interesting Smile

What they did with the Renault Avantime was a complete waste of time and money, it was never going to go faster than an Evo Rolling Eyes

I think you missed the point of that feature. The point of that feature was that home tuning is pointless. Clarkson famously hates modified cars.

Poorly proven, that a slow family car will never be as quick as a performance car, particularly if it's modified by amateurs (iirc they bought some wheels/tyres and then some different tyres for those wheels).

A much better example was the horsepower heroes feature they used to have on vroom vroom. Normally they'd have an Escort Cosworth that had 100k spent on it, putting out a stupid amount of bhp.

One week they had a brand new VXR turbo that had all the usual mods, K&N air filter, custom exhuast etc. I put out 1 horsepower more than stock, the owners face was priceless Laughing

Episode 3's much better, as they're actually using those things with 4 wheels, what are they called again?

Don't need link personally, I have Amazon Prime anyway. I'm banking on watching them during Christmas.

Must they keep doing the celebrity brainstorm bit?

No American, which was good.

Hammond "winding them up" across the whole Italian film was pointless and grating IMO.

Episode 1 I have forgotten. Episode 2 I have almost forgotten, but I remember it was very repetitive. Episode 3 could have been good if it didn't pummel Hammonds annoying larks into the ground.

Underwhelmed so far tbh.

Half way through episode 4 and I am browsing BCF. I have now forgotten episodes 1, 2 and 3 entirely along with the first half of episode 4.

Either 1 of 2 things has happened. Either I have alzheimer's disease and I am going to die soon or I have become one of them people bored of top gear that goes on the internet to complain about how Top Gear / Grand Tour isn't as good as it was before.

Good god I hope I have alzheimer's...

I watched episode 1 and thought it was ok but then somehow just found better things to do than watch the other episodes.

And on this day in history, Roger agreed with the Grauniad. Shocked

People bawwing about the scripting's moronic, Top Gear was always scripted, they never hid that fact. You can argue it has become less subtle over the years, but you can still see it if you watch the older episodes of TG.

I dunno what people were expecting? They've carried on where they left off, and why wouldn't they, it's a formula that has made them all incredibly wealthy.
