After the recent theft of my bike and the expectant payout from the insurance I'll soon be back on the market for a new set of wheels.

Due to losing all but 1 years NCB my insurance has gone through the roof so anything with a fairing is out of the question.

Having run quotes for many different bikes I've shortlisted the following which are somewhat affordable and I like the look of (very important criteria for me).

Kwak ER6N
BMW F800R

I've ridden the ER6N before for a period and really liked it. It was ideal for my commute so that's my safe bet as I think I know all there is to know about it.
The BMW I like the look of and so far have read some good things about it. Can anyone provide some real user opinion on this bike? How is the reliability? Any known niggles? Any unexpected costs to account for?

as always, thanks for the input.. Thumbs Up

The F800R is from the same family as my GS. The paint will flake off the sump, some of them developed piston slap, and there was a recall for a cutting out problem. That's about it, far less than many other modern BMWs.

Any used example that you buy now should be fine, have been sorted, or is unlikely to get worse. The 800 twins aren't super smooth and have little character, but they're torquey and efficient.

They're cheap to run and service, and easy on consumables. I've put over 8000 miles on a rear tyre and it's still got a fair bit of life left. Stability is great with the under-seat tanks. If you get one with the pushy-button indicators, don't fret, it's a sensible system and you'll soon come to appreciate it.

There's a valve check every 12,000 miles which will run expensive if you do it at a Motorrad. I skipped my 12,000 mile check because owners who've done them at much higher mileages report that they're still all in spec, and also because I wouldn't give the local Motorrad the sweat from my balls.
