Hey all.

Ive recently been thinking about red light cameras in my area.

Since when Im filtering to the front of the queue, when the lights go green, I want to get away from traffic and since my bike isn't all that powerful, I start moving as soon as the lights go amber.

I know this isn't a good habit and once I get a slightly more powerful bike I probably wont need to do this. But can I get flashed when the lights are in the RED-AMBER stage prior to a green light?

Please let me know if this is in the wrong area~
Thanks for the help!

I'd worry more about getting potato'd by an amber gambler coming the other way.

Do you have a google map link or snapshot of zed camera so we can clarify that you are indeed talking about a red light camera and not mistaking it for the endless array, it seems, of other ones?

If you're on a bike that can't outrun cars then I wouldn't be bothering to attempt to since all your doing is holding everyone else up and increasing risk for no reward. I tried on my 125 recently for the first in a while and discovered beside a moment of madness it's not something I'd make a habit of on a lower powered bike.

If you've been doing it and not been flashed so far, it's pretty safe to assume you're in the clear.

I believe they come on about 1 second after the red light is shown, I'm not sure when they turn off though.

I've been doing this on a 125 for the past few years, no problems. I always check for the amber gamblers; it takes one to know one. This is on 30/40 roads; any faster and I'd be hanging back.

@Ste Only a plucky little 125.

@mjn51 Yea, hence the "bad habit." I dont really like doing it and try to avoid it for the most part.

You're worried about a red light scamera catching you when the light is amber?

It's red and amber, just before it turns green......I would expect the red light camera to turn off a couple of seconds before red+amber, but I don't know for sure.

You are correct, my pedigree chum.

Red light cameras do not activate until a couple of seconds after the light changes to red.

They deactivate a couple of seconds before the light changes to amber.

A quote from a website:

Quote:
Red light camera systems typically employ two closely spaced inductive loops embedded in the pavement just before the limit line to measure the speed of vehicles.
Using the speed measured, the system predicts if a particular vehicle will not be able to stop before entering the intersection, and takes two photographs of the event.
The first photo shows the vehicle just before it enters the intersection, with the light showing red, and the second photo, taken a second or two later, shows the vehicle when it is in the intersection.

I would imagine if you are positioned at the front of the queue you will be past the 2 induction loops that detect vehicle speed, so you should be ok.

Not so fast all - I got flashed by a red light camera a few months back. Filtered to the front of the queuing traffic and my front wheel was slightly over the white stop line in order to get infront of car number 1. Light went amber and I took off. Saw two bright flashes in my mirror - it was dusk so obvious to see. Not sure whether or not it was from the sensors on the road or the fact I went off at full throttle and maybe hit faster than 40mph or whatever the camera was triggered to shoot at (it was a speed camera as well as red light)

From my understanding of it, the loops in the road are pressure sensitive. So, they will know when a vehicle has gone over one but not the next. There are usually about 6 - 8 of the things embedded in the tarmac. The fact that the lights had gone red and I then rolled over the white stop line would have triggered the system to interpret that someone had technically run the red light (although I stopped of course).

Anyway, nothing came of it. I kept the video on file to prove that I went on amber. I would say it is however possible to get done. I now always count to 1 before going off on amber, which is probably a good idea for the red light runner coming across me anyway, especially in London hey!?

The camera's aren't full proof, I set one off (covering the direction to my left) performing a right turn on my bicycle Confused so I wouldn't have been able to trigger the loop. I assume this one was the new speed/red light camera although I've no idea why it went off.

More revs required.

You can be in gear ready for the lights to go green and there's nothing (too Laughing) wrong with almost starting to creep forwards when the amber light comes on.

To be at risk of setting off a red light camera you'd have to have pulled away when the light was still red. Don't do that, especially at junctions with red light cameras. Wink

Red to amber = rekt
Amber to green = win

I'm pretty sure the letter of the law is that red and amber still counts as red, but I aren't looking up chapter and verse.

As long as the cameras don't pick it up though I wouldn't worry.
