Hi, came here to look for some possible answers or tips on my problem, the CBR's engine started having really loud knocking noises coming from the engine, I was kinda stupid and went for a longer journey without checking the oil. So what happened, I was cruising around 80mph, started accelerating more and suddenly there was power loss, as it cut off. I've let off the throttle, got back to my destination and as I got off motorway I heard bad knocking noises. First of all I checked the oil, unsuccessfuly, it was bloody empty, nothing in there, yeah stupid me, learnt my lesson.

Ran to the shop to get more oil and clean up from the previous one, the new oil came out fully black, filled it up again with clean one, started the bike and still ticking. It is rideable, starts, runs etc, but ticks like hell, nearly louder than the exhaust without db killer. The ticking go with the same pace as RPM raise, to add I've removed the oil cap and it was spitting oil. Checked the crankcase breather and it is pretty blocked (did not touch it yet). The ticking expands up to about 8k rpm, after that you can't hear it anymore, and when you let off the throttle, hence I didn't hear it on the motorway.

My question is what could of possibly go, the crankshaft, bearings, or valves? I've researched on about CBR's and theres often a faulty with the cam chains, could this be the reason? To add it is a 2011 fuel injected model with over 23k on clock Very Happy

If you've ran it dry for a while (sounds like it), it really needs stripping and looking at. So many bad things can happen when here is no oil where there needs to be oil. I reckon you have at least some pinching/scoring in the cylinders and knackered bearings.

Previous owner ran the little YBR dry. I knew it would need an engine swap, but it managed about 1600 very loud and vibey (well oiled and looked after) miles. Then it lot go. Crank, bearing, rod, rings, walls - All toast. I gave up looking at that point.

Strip it and fix it before it shakes itself apart, or drop a new lump in it.

If that's the case I'll probably put a new engine in it, and than strip the current one apart and see what was up. The parts seem pretty expensive.

If you have the time and the ability, it might be worth stripping it first. Bearings really do not like being run dry, but they're cheap to replace. It's just a lot of hassle getting to them as well as getting them out.

Exactly what I've considered to do, but finding an engine isn't a very easy process, any suggestions or help where I can find them, as there isn't really many for 2011 onwards models.

Right I've took the engine out and checked the valves, one is pretty loose and the other so tight it doesn't move, could this be the problem?

That depends where the crank is positioned. If the valve is in the shut position, I can't imagine you could prod it open by hand.

Get a Haynes manual. It will give you pretty detailed instructions, and have your min/max/nominal clearances in it. You will also need feeler gauges if you don't have. A few quid on fleabay. Look for a 56 blade set, it will have anything you *ever* need in Metric and Imperial. Under a fiver from China, a bit more already imported.

Conrod is in a good condition, and overall the bike has got compression, ordered new piston set and than will look onto gudgeon pin. Maybe this will help. Anyone know how I should put on the cam chain or just stick it there?
