I do not own a dog but I meet up with many who do in the countryside. The Country Code lays down rules for dog walkers

"Keep dogs under effective control

When you take your dog into the outdoors, always ensure it does not disturb wildlife, farm animals, horses or other people by keeping it under effective control. This means that you:
Keep your dog on a lead, or
keep it in sight at all times, be aware of what it’s doing and be confident it will return to you. promptly on command."

Every week I end up arguing with people that have out of control hounds, today for instance...Two 20 something year old girls with a Lab Cross at a local lake. firstly dog runs down to shoreline off lead and will not come back when called and proceeds to knock over a Polish guy's fishing gear eventually they get the dog back and I suggest they put the dog on a lead so that they can control it
Latter I encounter them again dog soaking wet and muddy and still off the lead and as soon as it sees me it runs 50 yards away from the owners towards me ignoring their calls and jumps up me. I have another word with them but they insist that it is their right to let the dog do what it pleases as it is a public place. Opinions please.

Generally most (Not All!) people with dogs all think their dog is special.
Anyone that points out to them that they're being inconsiderate to others just hides behind the 'they don't like dogs' viewpoint.
Basically the 'I'm all right jack' position...

I would point out the legislation that would allow a farmer to shot their pooch if it jumped at their livestock in the same manner that it jumped at you.

Dogs should always be under control. They'd soon moan if a bigger, more aggressive dog, got hold of theirs and savaged it. And I'm a dog owner.

Same should be for cats. Thumbs Up

I'd go home and start a post about it on a motorcycling forum to see what they think.

Yes. Absolutely like most parents (especially new parents).

They'll realise the dog isn't under control when it's happily following you to the boot of your car.

Strangeley most people, I know of, don't appear to be of the Victor Meldrew emnatlity, christ I bet you're fun at a party !! 'No, No, No, you mustn't use a corkscrew like that !!', Or, 'What do you mean, there's going to be fireworks at the bonfire night party'

Knocking over fishing gear, seems perfectly fine to me, I find them far more annoying and inconsiderate than dog owners, blocking the path on the canal, with their rods, net, seats etc, etc, or, once they've left leaving their empty beer cans an other rubbish behind, so, it's a shame, the fisherman didn't accompany his gear into the lake !! Razz Razz

Ahh, just re-read, your original post, 2 20 something year old girls, spurned your advances, you got the hump, and wound up their pet pooch !! giving you justification to whinge, gripe and moan.!!

I had a cairn who had to stay on a lead and a Border Terrier who was very good off the lead. However, when around farm animals the Border was always pt on a lead.

Dog owners who pick up the animal's mess into a bag and then tie it and chuck it up a tree confuse me.

My parents' dogs are awful. Both staffies.

One was rescued as a puppy from the streets of Doncaster. Quite likely used for fighting or generally abused as he's very introverted now (I think I've heard him bark about 3 times ever) and immediately attempts to absolutely destroy any dog he meets outside.

The other dog was bought as a puppy and raised terribly by my mum so, although friendly and safe, she has zero discipline at all and jumps 'playfully' up at peoples' faces when she sees them (this is what staffie's do to show love apparently, but that doesn't really make it okay in the human world).

I hate walking them and dread coming across other people or dog walkers. Every time it happens, without fail the dogs go a little bit wild, the aggressive one attempts to bite through his lead so he can get away and fight, and the other one jumps around playfully but no doubt looks aggressive next to the other one, while I have to politely laugh it off and joke that they're "just a bit playful".

Having said all that, they stay on a lead at all times and if I do get into any trouble, it's due to the owners coming near me or having their dog off the lead. Hasn't happened yet.

Really bloody annoys me though.

Anyway, dangerous dogs are one thing but...

I suspect they don't give a toss about anything, except perhaps what other peoples opinions of them is, so only pick it up if they think they are being observed, and then lob it as soon as no longer observed as too lazy to dispose of it properly.

Nice to know you don't generalise about people Rolling Eyes

I'm not into fishing but I've rarely had an issue with any of them.

The vast majority of fishermen don't blocked the towpath with their fishing kit. It's no big deal, I slow down briefly whilst passing them and then normal cycling speed can be resumed.

People with live aboard boats generally take up much more of the towpath than fishermen do. Continuous moorers can be a right PITA. Rolling Eyes

Towpath, built to tow boats, not for lycra louts!

The amount of times I'm tempted to shove my boathook in the front wheel of a cyclist on the towpath.

Its all about decency and respect, whatever the subject.
Get them off the lead and socialised asap, assuming you have a pup.
My dog has never been on a lead in our local park. Never been in any scrapes with other dogs, never run off and been a pain to anyone else.
You might get the occasional sit and stare at someone sitting on a park bench eating a sausage roll but that's about it.
I never worry about any other dog she meets, she knows how to act to avoid trouble.
Out of control dogs hack me off too, no need for it. Train the thing if needs it, keep on a lead if you can't be bothered although I always think its a great shame to have to keep it tethered in wide open spaces.

Oh yeah, pick its shit up and put it in a fucking bin.

Sleeping

All that's necessary is for people to have some consideration for others.

It's all very easy, when cycling and you encounter pedestrians you've just got to slow down to walking speed to go past them. Same deal with fishermen. But when continuous moorers have helpfully decided to spread their stuff / junk out across the towpath then you've got no option but to get off your bike to climb around all the junk that the pikey continuous moorers are hoarding.

It's worth pointing out that various towpaths around the country are national cycle paths that have been paid for and are maintained by Sustrans who're a cycling charity. https://www.sustrans.org.uk/our-services/what-we-do

Well you cant win against inconsiderate tossers who have no regard for other people.
To try to engage with them will only drag you down to their level and they have had more experience at being inconsiderate c*nts than you so they will win.

Wait until it`s a bloke behaving like that and then use something that he will understand and kick his face in Thumbs Up

Old school.

Apart from the shit litterers, its the owners who let their giant muddy pawed dogs jump up on you saying, 'Oh sorry, he always does that'.
Fuuuuuuuck! If he always does it, you know he's going to do it, fucking stop him before he does it!

And relax.

Please show me one example of sustrans paying for a Canal & River Trust towpath.
