Ta Thumbs Up - too busy today! That was the one I mentioned, just hadn't actually read the description very well (if it all) it seems.

(Though - annoyed I missed that second hand one.)

Spent too much time reading up on them this evening.

Think I'm even less sure now! Razz

There's an Anet A2 up for a little more (though blatantly not a UK seller despite the claims of stock in Glasgow). Seems to have some positives over the A8, but then not nearly as much knowledge/parts/etc around, though a lot will be similar.

The A2 is perfectly fine, but for things like autolevelling and upgrading, you will find yourself on your own when it comes to getting parts ready made to print and firmware. For a first time user, the A8 eases you into the world of 3D printing with the huge user based support network and files available on thingiverse. The A2 would be a challenge that I personally wouldn't recommend.

Okay, A8 definitely makes more sense on that basis.

However that one doesn't seem to have the same design frame as all the others listed as an A8, while this one does, though doesn't explicitly state A8:

That's because it's not an A8, the mainbord is Melzi, which are not that great and certainly wont work with the A8 firmware.
It's just a Prusa i3 clone like the A8, but made to look just like the A8, so as to entice people into buying it, thinking it is an A8.

You're welcome.

Sorry, just to confirm - you're saying the one I linked to isn't an A8, but the one you linked to (which I've quoted in this post) is?

^^ Both from my posts.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201774575542 Not an Anet A8 (check the mainboards) Anet make their own custom marlin based board, this printer has a melzi board, which are usually terrible when cloned for cheap printers.

What software are you guys using. I have been toying with the idea of a 3D printer for a while, but the I have not been keeping up with software side of things. I have a copy of the now long ended Pro desktop. Pretty sure it was discontinued before 3D printing was a thing.

I use Slic3r, Cura and Simplify3d.

There's benefits to each of them when printing certain objects.
Simplify3d for example is best when using custom support material, Cura is best for me for speedy prints that need no support and Slic3r is great for me with very rounded prints.

mine arrived from Gearbest last week, put it together last sunday and did some tinkering to make sure the bed and x axis are running true with a caliper and steel ruler.

I am looking forward to printing my first calibration cube this weekend.

I advise you to tie off the cables to the hotend etc up onto the carriage itself. There is a looped anchor supplied for this.

It stops any cable movement on the hotend and thermistor, as they will snap off mid print if left loose as you have them.

It's also a good idea to have the heated bed connector along the left side and not the back. Tie that off to the underside of the bed with a cable tie and supplied cable tie anchor. This stops movement in the connector, which as it's high amperage, will cause shorts if there is any play when the bed moves back and forth.

You can see the tie off for the hotend clearly in this video

Cool, thanks PJay, I just tied up the wires like you advised.

I have changed to a 30A power supply and I am waiting for a couple of mosfets from aliexpress. I have put on vertex bed cover and from what I've read, you can leave the heated bed off for PLA, so I am going to leave the heated bed wiring disconnected for now.

I thought I'd reuse the bearings on the filament feeder.

Yeah buildtak is great, no need to use anything other than some cleaning alcohol to make sure it's grease free and everything will stick well to it.

I have heard window cleaner works well too, but I have never used it.

Buildtak is semi-permanent in the respect that if you use it perfectly, it will last forever, but chance are you will damage it at some point, so the 3 pack at that price is worth getting. The single sheets are only slightly cheaper.

I can definitely see myself using buildtak again.

I have spent so much time on the printer today instead of replacing the rear disc on my bike.... its going to be dicey getting to work next week

Upgrading the PSU is a good idea if you want to run the heatbed at high temps.

As it's just 12V needed I thought it may be a good idea to use an ATX PSU as I have a few hanging about that are 30A or better. I was then thinking twice about it as chopping the cables up would be a pain in the anus and mess up a perfectly good PSU, so I done bought one of these:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331937797819

I am yet to install it, but it does seem well made and adds some nice fuses inline. There's also the added bonus that I can run some 5V or 3V stuff from it, like a Raspberry Pi (for Octoprint).

I will report back with my findings, but I cant really see that there would be an issue.

You also have to factor in the £30-£40 import duty when buying from gearbest.

Buying from Ebay with UK stock is the safer and quicker option, as not only do you not have to pay any more, you have the paypal protection if you have problems.

And if there's a problem and they claim it was sent from a UK address, you, I believe, only have to return it to a UK address if there's a problem.

Also I want my toys *now*! Smile

Thus I bought from the UK... but have bought from gearbest in the past for others and have been fine (plenty have had bad as well as good experiences however.)
