Here's the quality I have mine putting out at the moment.
I left the imperfections on so as to not cheat, But a little cleaning with a craft knife and it's almost perfect. |

Second one was also failing to turn up, so got this for £180:
Ebay link.
Was a couple of hours extra driving, but a good lot of extra bits for the £20 over kit price. |

After a good bit of error and some trial, managed to get a few decent prints.
Seems I've got to be very careful with bedheight.
Went a bit too far with the buildtak I'd separately ordered applied and the last spool holder bit stuck a bit TOO well.
Definitely pleased with my purchase - cheers for the info . |

I'm just using masking tape on the bed with 190 / 60 temps, pla prints great for me with a 0.4 first layer
best thing I've done is grease the bearings with proper linear bearing grease from the cnc machines at work, so now rather than making metal on metal noises, they glide quietly
oh, and I do have one shitty bearing on the z axis, but rather than complain I just ordered some spares for £2 off amazon ____________________ killa wrote: Im an ass man myself |

Yep, it's 12v. So something capable of pumping out a few hundred watts without aforementioned fires should be fine .
My apologies; it wasn't trustinchina, it was ayabright and homeoutlet. I think I may have had asked trustinchina a question and received a very helpful response. |

it will be a couple of weeks before I order as I'm away to london for a bit then I need to go to Amsterdam
but I think I'll be dropping some cash on my return ____________________ I have become comfortably numb

The PSU issues are not that the PSU is a fire risk (even though they have known to fail), it's that they are not really upto the job when pushing them. This is especially noticeable when printing materials like ABS, where you would want 250degrees at the hotend and 100 Degrees on the bed.
The stock 20A psu takes a good while to come up to temp and is at full whack when maintaining these temps.
That said, I still have the original PSU and it's performing fine, as I tend not to have the bed much over 40 degrees, as most of my printing is in PLA or similar, that can print on unheated beds.
A 30A supply is certainly preferable to the stock 20A though.
The mosfet is a better idea for a safety upgrade, as it diverts the current from the mainboard, which isn't that great at coping with it. That said, it was only the early board revisions that burned out, there have been no recent reports of the boards popping due to overloading the heating circuit, for a while now.
You can always use any PSU that has 12v @ 20A, and there are quite a few people out there that just power the bed from a separate ATX PSU.
I am planning on swapping over to an ATX PSU when and if the stock one gives up. I have purchased a little breakout board to make things easier and to not invalidate the warranty on the PSU.

Buying on Ebay for me at least was a breeze, they delivered within a week and I had no issue with them.
The key is cost really, as I didn't have to pay any import, if you order from china, you could get hit. If you buy from within the EU, there is nothing more to pay, so bear this in mind when comparing prices.
The question on if something is genuine or not is a tough one to answer to a beginner. Just ensure the model is Anet A8 and the description specifies that it is (They will always say they are). If there is no mention of the model, but it looks just like an A8, then it's not.
That said, even the ones that are lookalikes are capable printers and would be just as upgradeable and would give any beginner a solid base as an entry into the hobby.
Worst case scenario, you buy a Prusa i3 Clone that looks like another I3 Clone. Best case, you get a Tronxy, which some say are at least as good as the A8.
If you want advice on if a listing is original, ask here, I will try to get replay ASAP. |
