Hello

I recently bought what I was led to believe was a YBR125, unfortunately after being hit by a car recently and needing parts I've found out it isn't a YBR, but a sort of clone.

All documents and communications say YBR, started digging when my friend spotted a JYM decal tucked out of the way, VIN also says JYM, yet all official documents say YBR, which is what I insured it as. Several people have told me my bike isn't a YBR, and it was suggested I come here for advice.

I bought the bike trusting the dealer and largely based on YBR reviews, the situation I find myself in doesn't feel right and I'd appreciate any advice.

Sounds like you need to talk to trading standards.

Guessing somebody has bought a YBR frame with a V5 and just swapped plates on to a clone to double it's value.

The YBR is made by Jianshe for Yamaha.

Or more specifically a subsidary known as Jianshe Yamaha Motor Co. JYM

So you have a YBR.

Did they learn that in the SAS?

What wr said, your bike is very likely as much a Yamaha as any other.

What parts are giving you problems? Bear in mind that models do change and stock can sit around unsold, so your model year might not be the same as your registration year. Your model year can be determined from the 10th VIN digit.

You might well be right, but as a new rider when several YBR owners tell me mine isn't a YBR, I was inclined to believe them.

I recommended the lass to come here, as my likely suggestion to ram it up the dealers arse is probably not that helpful. You lot may be able to actually help her.

I've seen the VIN plate. It isn't a YBR. It's on there as a JYM125-2, and the plastics and style suggest a JS125-6a with luggage racks.

So a YBR with luggage racks.

You really think a dealer is going to buy a bike that looks like a YBR (and is made by the same company as the YBR) and then buy all the little bits that are different (clocks, engine covers, etc) respray it with the correct decals and then make a profit selling it?

Show us a picture of the bike and of the VIN plate and frame number.

As I said before of course it's going to have JYM in various places it's made by JYM (Jianshe Yamaha Motor Co).

If it's got fuel injection then it's as "Yamaha" as you're going to get.

If it's got a carb and fork reflectors, and a square headlight or a bikini fairing, then it might be a grey import Jianshe that's been naughtily badged up as a Yamaha.

Even if it's a grey import, it's unlikely to be that different from a proper YBR. The front brake caliper is bigger on the "Yamaha", and I believe the wheel bearing is different.

Can you show us some pictures of this Jianshe, and point out where it differs from a YBR? Is it actually causing you problems, or is this more of a "Why, I oughta..." point of principle?

Bear in mind that it says Yamaha on the V5C and the badges, so when you sell it, it'll be worth as much as a YBR.

And crazy thought, but wouldn't Yamaha UK be the definitive source for whether it's a grey import or not?

I have a legit JYM made YBR parked outside, I pointed out the same things you have, minus the condescension. This bike is not one. Ever seen a YBR VIN plate full of Chinese characters, no English? Me neither.

This is not a YBR. I don't know who's blagging in this case, but I've never seen a dealer that wouldn't glance at the BIN even on a PX.

Grey import. Doesn't stop it being a YBR though.

Looks like this. I thought I was getting a YBR with a newer headlight until other owners pointed out the engine mismatch, and I got a photo of the VIN.

If it's as dodgy as your link, no wonder you're concerned.

Given that you've not bothered providing pictures or any details beyond "JYM" and some flat assertions, I submit that we're being graciously open minded.

Picture of offending bike and VIN plate?

I'm struggling to believe the VIN itself has Chinese characters as even Chinese bikes use the standard format on VIN's.

You do realise that if the V5 is stating it's a Yamaha YBR then you are alleging some kind of conspiracy to import a clone and take all the trouble and cost to make it look identical (including converting it to FI).......... Who would bother? There's no money to be made doing it.

More likely your friend has some weird grey import (you could probably tell from the V5) or just a Friday afternoon special where some baijiu addled slave worker bolted on a few parts meant for the domestic "jianshe" bikes.

My house mate as the photos of the VIN, she's gone to bed. I'm doing what I can on my phone as my computer is broken. Fully realize everything can be legit, so trying not to identify the dealer and give them any negative attention.

I'm not sure if I can even upload photos from my phone directly to the forum.

Been in contact with Yamaha, awaiting their reply.

Your picture doesn't really do much to confirm or deny your problem. it's a picture of a bike. That is all.

Photo was saved from YBR Owners discussion on Facebook, mine looks just like this. I've already spoken to a dealer who suggested it might be an important and have a bike shop looking at the bik toon the morning, no doubt I'll have more information tomorrow.
