Am about a quarter of the way through my refurb of the GPZ (1998). With the tank removed and fairing off, I've noticed a cable is badly frayed and ready to go - the outer sheath has gone and the cable is exposed/rusty. It's not the clutch, brake, or speedo cables, so that only leaves the tacho, can anyone confirm please, as I don't have a Haynes.

Also, I recently had the air filter out to check, and it's okay, just a bit dirty around the edges so can I wash in petrol, and reinstall?

Thanks for any assistance.

Chris

Under the tank? By the carbs/FI? Wouldn't possibly be the throttle cable, would it?

Thats sarcasm, btw, in case you didn't realise. Can't have you thinking I'm being helpful whe I'm actually taking the piss.

Hi

It is an electronic tacho so no rev counter cable.

There are 2 throttle cables, a pull cable and a return cable.

All the best

Katy

You're lucky you spotted it now. I was caught out with a snapped throttle cable many miles from home once.

One of the best things you can do with those bikes is to throw away the return cable. You don't need it.

If you're only 25% into a refurb that you intend to actually finish, and you can't work out what a throttle cable is when you encounter it, your first purchase should be a manual.

At least I can tell the difference between a spinning cable that goes from the gearbox to the instrument panel and a push/pull cable that goes to the carbs....

Chris, Nobby isn't being a cunt, he's making a fair point. Don't take it personally, recognising the routing and function of basic bike pieces will form a massive piece of your refurbishment if you don't have a manual.

For comparison, I'm confident I could dismantle any bike made in the last 100 years and with a little bit of tracing tell you what any cable at all does. They all come from somewhere, and go to somewhere, once you have both ends of the puzzle it becomes self explanatory.

I'm not being awkward, buy yourself a manual, if you can't recognise/trace a throttle cable then you won't get far without a proper professionally written guide.

Agree completely there thanks, but I'm skint, totally, so posting questions on here is a good start for me... Okay, I'm not that technically minded, cables can look a bit confusing, the choke cable actually looks as if it's coming from the tacho area, hence my earlier question. BTW, anyone know if I can clean the air filter or is it an item that MUST be replaced?

Ta, and thanks for your advice about Nobby. He's a nobby sarcastic bast*rd Rolling Eyes

You can clean the air filter depending on its condition. If it's falling apart then replace it. Assuming it's a sponge type filter.

I'd just replace the air filter. Not terribly expensive and then you know how old it is. Hopefully then wont land up like this (serviced 1,500 miles previously according to the the guy I bought it off):

Jeezo m8, that filter is well and truly f**ked. Thanks for the advice too... think I'll find the money for a replacement before the bike is ready for the road again.

Cheers.
