I read somewhere that crosshead screws fitted to Jap Bikes are different to British crosshead screws, [Phillips and Pozidrive} and that the correct screwdriver is a JIS [Japanese Industry Standard]. Can anyone confirm this please?

Yep, most Jap bikes use them usually identified by a dot or punch mark on the head. The screwdriver in your bike's tookit will be JIS.

As Pete says, the one in your toolkit will be JIS, but they can be a bit rubbish for tight screws as the handles are inadequate.

I bought one of these - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003BGZ9CO - much, much nicer to use and worth every penny - though it takes a while to come from Japan.

Yeah I learned the hard way after making a pigs ear of the velocity stack screws with a british phillips.

The JIS in my Honda toolkit is wank, it's one of those jobbies that has a seperate slip-on handle.....that slips off.

Might have to order one of those bamt, are they definitely JIS tipped?

Does a JIS tip work with a british phillips screwhead?

If you want a cheaper option, how about just buying the bits? (£1.50 ish plus p+p)
https://www.onlyqualitytools.com/catalog/Vessel/Insert_Bits.html
(the section you need is Vessel B33+ Series Insert Bit Phillips Dual JIS/ISO standard tips)

This site explains the difference between Jis and Phillips https://www.vesseltools.com/hand-tools/screwdrivers/jis-japanese-industrial-standard/view-all-products.html

edit. yes, jis will work in phillips...

It is most definitely JIS - it made very easy work of removing some screws that I simply couldn't shift with the Yamaha & Suzuki removable handle tools I had to hand (so easy that I couldn't believe I'd had a problem with the toolkit drivers), and also removed screws that were so tight that I'd started to damage the heads of with my normal non-JIS drivers. It has impact functionality, but I've never needed to try that.

The driver does seem to work with other crosshead screws, but I'd not guarantee that the profile is perfect.

My JIS screwdrivers were £40 each and worth every penny. The difference between making do with a posi or using the right tip is amazing, a JIS won't "cam out".

With a small ratchet I find these far easier to use than any screwdriver, and you can get more leverage on them too. Most bit sets have a couple of JIS sizes in them, even cheap ones so you may find you already have some.

+1 for buying some JIS bits or the screwdrivers themselves. They make a MASSIVE difference and very short work of the screws in the top of master cylinder reservoirs

Do they?
I've never come across a set that included any.

In my experience, yes. I always wondered why there were pairs of screwdriver bits that looked to be the same size, now I know.. Some fit JIS like a glove, others don't. They're not marked up specially or anything, you just have to try them and see.

It would be "interesting" to compare the wording of the Philips, Posidrive and JIS patent applications, because it's hard to think that the wordings of applications would be deemed to differ sufficiently to warrant separate patents. Perhaps the proof was in the practice - i.e. demonstrating that the wrong kind of screwdriver would shag the head of a screw should I suppose be evidence enough that some quite different casting/machining etc. is in play.

JIS drivers used to be very hard to find in UK tool shops (apparently, they are common amongst the R/C fraternity, but only in the smaller sizes, so model shops sometimes keep them) the internet has made it easier, so I now have a set.

If you want a quick workaround, get a cheap Philips (NOT a Pozi) and carefully grind the point flat - not perfect, but better.
