I have 2 0.5a usb ports in the back of my TV. Can I combine then to power something that needs 0.9a? It would be neater than running a separate Power supply.

There's less likelihood of disembowelling your TV if you splice in a powered USB supply from the TV supply.
Replace the end of the kettle lead [Or figure-8 lead] with a twin plug socket, then use a very short kettle lead for the TV and a plug-in adapter for the USB.

One port could be running 4.9v and one port running 5.1v - wouldn't this mean one port would start to drive the other under no-load? Does your old drive have some sort of protection built-in?

doesn't have a kettle lead.

Found this so I'm going to give it a go.

You can try. I've got an external hard drive that plugs into two USB ports, one for data + power, the other just for power.

I imagine it would also depend on the board the usbs are drawing that .5a from. It may well be shared.
Probably not, but it could be.
There is no reason to suggest two separate 500ma supplies wouldn't give 1amp out though, so it's certainly worth a go.

It didn't seem to need both plugged in with mine, but I understood very early USBs were not able to run it from one - not enough juice.

One other point to note, my Samsung TV powers off the ports when you put it into standby - so depending on the device, you might want it powered all of the time to save boot times and/or overnight updates etc

My Sony TV can't make it's damn mind up. Recently bought an LED light strip to stick to the back of it (yes, I am that cool) that's powered by USB and it turns off with the tv, then on again ten minutes later, then off.

Could do with a solution to this though, the portable hard drive that I download everything to takes too much grunt for my PI to power it.

Buy a 5v charger with ~1A rating (more is fine). Splice it on to the USB power cables, then job sorted.

Could get a Y-cable and just plug the other USB into a USB wall plug phone charger rather than a standard USB port.

That Lead worked fine,

I have a TV mounted on the wall with cables running through the wall.

My TV has 3 USB ports (2 x 0.5a and 1 x 0.9a) I have a kodi box and HDD to go in, both worked on the 0.9a but wouldn't on the 0.5a ports. Using that cable now they both work and everything is hidden behind the TV. Thumbs Up

I get the impression it runs of some kind of none kettle lead power cable that runs through the wall so he can't really plug anything in as it'll mean a wire going up the wall.

I went to the trouble of getting my father-in-law to install these in key places around my place when we were refurbishing - excellent product. and yes, one of them is behind the TV for exactly this purpose. Thumbs Up

Is that a shared 2.1a or 2.1amp per socket?

Do the sockets give out 2.1amps?

I ask as I've tried various car chargers with these sort of claims and apps on my phone tell me they aren't delivering the current promised yet a branded charger does (proving the app should be accurate).
