this safe

Has been under our stairs for the last 20 years.
it was left by the father in law who moved away just as long ago.

the wife dosn't think there is much of value in it, but she wants it open before we move...

here is a close up of the cheap plate in the front.

i have access to a range of power tools.
my knowledge of such things is limited to not blowing the doors off.
given i have no C4 the odd of that are slim.

i'm not looking to save the safe.
just get at whats inside so i can go on flog it.

I'd seachr the ebay and other places to roughly get the value of the safe. It might be worth a reasonable amount of money.

To open it, well, show the picture to a locksmith, perhaps? If you want to destroy it, just cut off the hinges, I guess.

You do know that hinges on a safe are just to hold the door up? They aren't a security feature. The chances are that there are locking bars going through the hinge side of the safe as well as the other side, top and bottom.

Where are you?

Last time I had to open one like this.
I had an identical one next to it to compare workings.

Picking wasn't an option. It took 12 hours with a large disc cutter to cut a single slot in the face to manipulate the lock mech.

Either settle down with a cuter and a pile of discs or pay a pro that says a fixed price for guaranteed entry

In which case it may be easier to go through the back.

If you want to flog it, then pay a locksmith to open it nondestructively. Said locksmith might be able to sort you out with a key for it, too.

I agree with Rhyno, the safe will, probably be worth more than the contents.
Get a locksmith on the case!

It'll most likely have a hole in the bottom which would be used to fix it to the floor from the inside with a whopping great big bolt. The hole can be used for inspection with an endoscope.

I'd make that my first move before wasting any time - but then I have an endoscope, you may not.

I will tip it up tomorrow and see if there is a hole.
the endoscopes don't look expensive, if it dosnt help then at-least Ste can suggest some things i might do with it.

If it's a half decent safe then a typical locksmith won't be up to it - I work with a locksmith of 30 odd years and he has resorted to brute force on every safe we've needed to open (about 4 in my time working here).

A locksmith will want to be sure you're the lawful owner of the safe. He'll ask why you don't have the key, and will quickly learn that you don't know what's inside. Are you then going to leave it with him and trust him to call you when he's got hold of tens of thousands in bearer bonds or gold? Most likely, there'll be 'nothing inside' if you go down that route.
