My conclusion on reading the article is that motorbikes seem to be really dangerous.

Of course treatment should be on offer. And I'm actually in favour of complete decriminalisation.

The specific issue is this though. Consider someone carrying out a prohibited activity, whether that's taking illegal drugs, or doing bad stuff after taking legal drugs, or in order to fund them.

If you cannot stop that behaviour by credibly threatening to shoot them in the head, then you might as well go ahead and pull the trigger.

It's a litmus test. Do they care enough to keep living? If they don't, then only bad things will follow, for them and everyone around them.

We're far too precious about the sanctity of life. It's not like the world is under-populated.

Why stop at drug addiction? We could line up the tens of thousands of people suffering from Depression, press the barrel to their heads and say "cheer up now or die!!!!". If that ain't incentive enough to snap out of it then I don't know what is!

Rodrigo Duterte Says His Admission of Opioid Abuse Was a Joke but Concerns Remain

Lawmakers on all sides in the Philippines are now demanding President Rodrigo Duterte come clean about his health, following revelations last week that he had been abusing the same potent opioid painkiller that killed the singer Prince.

Known for waging a ruthless and very deadly drug war since he took office in June, Duterte faces tough questions following his admission last Monday that he had abused fentanyl — prescribed, he said, to relieve pain caused by spinal injuries suffered from motorbike accidents.

Duterte said that his doctor ordered him to stop using the powerful painkiller because he was “abusing the drug” by going beyond the prescribed dosage, reports the Philippine Star.

The most obvious problem with this policy is the problem with most policies: there's no guarantee that it's applied as intended.

I'd guess that a substantial number of these extrajudicial deaths merely have drug use / dealing as an excuse. It sounds like an excellent way of getting rid of pesky neighbours etc. Spread some rumours, stash some evidence, if other people don't off them you could do it yourself.

It's a fine way of getting rid of homeless / very poor people too. Nobody cares enough about their lives to know if they were on drugs or not, and it gets them off the streets.

And yet he's cracking down on drugs.

Let's not forget that this is the same guy who's only grievance to the news that an Australian woman had been gang raped and murdered in his country was that "he didn't get to go first in the rape". Followed up by stating categorically that he was not joking.
