Well yes, Im not really sure why im posting a thread about it, but did my CBT today. Getting new tyres fitted tomorrow and I can sort my insurance and tax out and ill be on the road Friday or Saturday.

Might as well say it, was a bit embarrassing. I ended up going on the road with a automatic. Its not that I have a problem with gear changing or anything.

I kinda struggled with the very slow crawl speed practice in the centre place. Found it hard to find the right balance between clutch back brake and throttle. So its something to practice around here.

Oh and must remember to take glasses off before trying to take off my helmet, ended up scratching my face Embarassed

I know for the most part you cant really fail a CBT but still. Im rather chuffed. At the very least its a thing thats out the way now.

I would have done it all sooner if it wasnt for money. But I had an adjustment on my ESA and they back dated all my pay so I had enough to get everything done.

Thank god for that. Now i can get my self from A to B without having my dad drive me everywhere.

I got so used to cycling in London all my life, you really forget how much you rely on motorised transport out in the countryside.

It was the right decision if you're planning to stick with the 125 for a while. A couple of hours of practice on your mighty racebike[*] should see you right.

Don't get too hung up on using the rear brake at slow speed. Throttle and clutch is sufficient, if not ideal - I passed my tests that way.

Job done for the next two years, enjoy your freedom.

[*] Expect a real 60mph, if that. Your speedo may flatter to deceive.

Well done.

Get out and enjoy the freedom.

Try and take it easy the first few weeks until you get the hang of things. Try and not get too frustrated when you stall at roundabouts and junctions etc. Don't get frustrated when you get car drivers overtaking you due to your "L Plates". Allow yourself extra time for your journeys. Take the weather into consideration especially at this time of year.

I don't know whether you have purchased an automatic or just completed you CBT on one. After a few days with a geared bike it will become second nature.

You will get a feel for things in a short time.

An idea would be to go to a quiet Industrial Estate and practice your gear changing, throttle and clutch operation and get the feel for braking. Outside of traffic makes it a whole lot easier.

Yeah plan on something like that. Though being out in the countryside there are some very quiet backroads I can do that on too.

Right I better go and take my wheels off my bike. Dads going to drop them in at the local workshop to get the tyres changed while Im at an appointment tomorrow.

+1 This! I've been riding for 2 months so have experienced these recently - Getting overtaken on a dual carriageway at 50mph by the likes of a Range Rover isn't the best feeling as sometimes, cars don't realise how close they seem to be. But it's better that these impatient drivers are in front of you and driving away than behind you getting ratty.

Don't panic or get frustrated, they're not going to drive into you, they'll get impatient for a second or two and get over it.

All the best Thumbs Up

Correct, the DL196 validates your provisional entitlement to ride anything that's age appropriate. It may have "automatic" written on it, but that (currently) has no meaning.

The DVSA ran a consultation recently which (among other things) concluded that in principle they'd like to change that, but in practice it's not going to happen.

i dont get this whole gears thing

I ride scoots and I enjoy it

I have ridden the manual version of my scooter and it was a pain

never seemed to be in the right gear

same with cars I drive a manual car its no more or less fun then an auto its the roads and the scenery that make it fun

in fact the best car I have ever driven was a 1978 automatic mini

it was only a 1300 but it handled like a race car except when it went up a gear it felt like someone had booted the seat under you :lol:was ace round the twisty lanes

if pushing a pedal and pulling a lever is fun then I must be doing something wrong because I cant find anything more boring

Are you a commuter by any chance? If so then it would make sense, I just get no pleasure from twist and go, I need that clutch and extra lever in my life...

I would have quit biking if it was automatic by now... probably because I'm a bit of a hooligan.

It's just a matter of preferences... got nothing against scooters, but I just think they're boring as, I had one, sold off as got bored of twist and go, got another 125cc geared bike... loved it from the very start - even though I could not ride manual back then as no experience, I understood the basic concept and quickly fell in love.

Anyway as i mentioned gear changing isnt really the issue. I can change gears fine. I practiced that well enough on my bike on some land a while ago. Got the whole left side is clutch not back brake thing a while ago...

It was just the slow crawl practice i struggled with.

Anyway i do plan to so my full licence some point next year... Maybe in the summer or autumn.

Get some good practice, get used to being on the road at speeds faster than a push bike :p pick up some bad habits to stress the instructor out with :p

Ill look around of course but the local one i did my cbt at said 550 quid, and its in two parts. And its a flat rate, and they would teach me for how ever long it takes to teach me... So if it takes me 2 months (joking) I would be really getting my monies worth :p

Anyway me and dad managed to get the wheels off the bike to take to the local workshop tomorrow... Wasnt as easy as my brothers aprilla. The brake mechanism is more fiddly...

I also noticed that the mechanical speedometer sender thing is a fairly standard one. the Cup looking style one... And ive seen hall effect ones that fit that style... Good news for my speedo project. Means I wont have to have the thing inside the main body.... I can make the design thinner. And it lends better to the whole universal speedo idea I would like, if i was to ever turn it into a product to sell...

On friday Ill call aviva (gave me the best of bad quotes) and get my insurance done. DVLA for tax and ill take the bike round the block a few times to get a good feel for it. (the block is about a 4-6 mile round trip :p) Ive been so looking forward to this...

nope I don't commute anywere havnt needed to really for over two years

and until this year I was riding daily but never had to commute more then about 10 miles in over 10 years

I have owned a few bikes in that time but still don't get the geared is better thing

my 400 would still leave most cars behind off the lights anyway and was quicker off the mark then most bikes as I didn't have to fuck about changing gear
my mate used to struggle on his bandit(became mine for a while) to keep up on the twistys on it
as I had got accustomed to riding it rather well and would throw it about a fair bit
he then bought a brand new gxsr and wont ride unless its sunny so his riding has got rather rusty

Well done mate. Don't worry about the gears etc you will get it. I did my CBT at end of October and I had to go back the following week as my confidence taking corners at slow speed and doing U turns was really bad and I also had difficulty with the slow riding clutch control but the next week I was fine. Just takes a wee bit of time to get it to come naturally but it does. Have fun mate Smile

Well he has the more powerful bike so maybe you're just a better overall rider.

I would be rather interested to see how my 47hp 650 would do against a larger capacity scooter though.

It would probably do terribly considering it would be ridden by some teenage simpleton whose biking experience consists of telling bored strangers on the internet how 'mental I am innit'

It's not about "working hard" or "getting to the next level".

Just ride your fucking bike and stop being a tool. You're young, it's not easy to do the latter, but the key is to stop trying to be a "biker". It's just a label, we're all people, you don't need to fit into whatever stereotype you have in your head. Remember - Most of us have had *far* faster, more aggressive, louder, better made, whatever, bikes than you. You don't need to try to impress us, especially not with a shitty Kwak twin. There's a reason riding schools shove DAS pupils on them.

I'm really not trying to impress anyone Sad how is a 47bhp 650 impressing anyone?

You just need to relax, nothing about that was showing off at all.

If it helps, I admit, I can barely wheelie, I haven't gotten my kneedown, my bike isn't fast at all (compared to supersports), however I am extremely proud of it and don't really care, I am not skilled at all.

Relax your t**s and back off please, I'm sure you've got better things to do than harass me.

Also 99% of my posts aren't fully serious so you should stop treating them as such, still love you, you bored grumpy git Thumbs Up Laughing
