 |
|
So, I am blitzing back through the UK from Christmas Day to first week of Jan (7th/8th).
Not really by choice, especially this time of year which will I'm sure throw some hurdles my way, but it is work sponsored (ish) and my grandfather is not long for this warm and fluffy plane. So, silver linings.
However, I do not want to rely on my family, but I don't want to hoof too much money around needlessly. Most of my friends are busy, and it is an awkward time to stay with people.
I checked out AirBnB, most single rooms start at 30 quid a night, which seems mad.
Does anyone know any good ways to save money, without being a dick?
Good car sharing things, ticket buying sites, accommodation services etc etc. ____________________ Top cat

London a bit, Hertfordshire (Stevenage) and Leicestershire (Leicester/Wigston).
Ideal would be some non mental way to use a car for the two weeks, and have somewhere to crash if I need to. Literally any other English speaking country in the world, this would be a cheap piece of piss... even as a non-resident.
Boo. |
How would you do this in any other English speaking country then?
Why would it be cheaper in Canada, US, Australia, Ireland? ____________________ TZR250 2MA road, TZR250 1KT road, TZR250 2MA race, TDR250, YZF-750R Boost colours.

Ignoring the tone...
Because in most Western countries, insurance is on the vehicle, not the driver.
Which means, in short, that anyone with a spare banger could lend me it to drive around. Breakdown cover also usually on the vehicle not the driver.
I would then have a cheap and easy way to move around the country, and a place to crash I needed to. Saving me many ponds.
Every time I come back I want to borrow a bike (or car), but the insurance head fuck ruins it every single time.
More than happy to be proven otherwise, but hire cars are usually close to 20 quid/day in the UK. If they were closer to a fiver, I'd be game. ____________________ Top cat

So you plan to come at the worst time of year. Places close up (christams closing from 24 to 28 due to bank holidays) or are fully booked as it's holiday season.
Charge a hell of a lot more due to above reason....
Public transport is a nightmare due to holidays and trains might not run due to works on lines......
Most tourist attractions will be shut.
Weather at best will be rubbish.
Best bet fook off to the other places you mentioned as it will be cheaper and easier |
Yep, and I have to do a visa over this period too. From great glorious nation of Kazakhstan. I am sure it will go very smoothly over this period.
Now, remembering I am stuck with this period, and not much I can do about it... Le help.
I just realised I have to leave Kazakhstan on the 25 of December... but I don't have to go onwards straight away. My plane stops at Minsk.
Worth the ballache to arrange a transit visa and get the two days there. Can't be more of a pain than hitting London right on "get pissed and eat nuts" day when no one will want a jetlagged grumpy tit rolling around their house.
Plus I'd hit Minsk at a more sensible time than the current Christmas Day midnight to LHR I might get ...

Insurance is on the vehicle in the U.K. too. The check is on the vehicle, not the driver, although if not named, the driver needs third party cover to drive other vehicles, not owned by them.
I'd be amazed if all other Western countries ignored the risk of the driver and insured all cars for all drivers, irrespective of age, risk, accidents and offences.

Well, I found something vaguely interesting.
Rent a banger is down in Plymouth so no luck.
This looks more promising though https://carclub.easycar.com/
Insurance and breakdown included, 20 quid a day. The airBnB of cars (AirBnB is also expensive as fuck in the UK, funnily enough).
Cars for 20 quid a day, although most are closer to 30 or above. ____________________ Top cat

If you know where you are going couldn't you put an ask up on blablacar I know you can do it all over europe as well. Working it out with a friend before you could get from Bristol uk- Poland for less than £100.
Of course you would have to put the dates up now and be certain where you are going. Failing that if you just want somewhere to crash couldn't you look for someone hiring out a cheap caravan. It will be the off peak season so you might get it really cheap.

when we need a van or something other than our car we use this place
www.kendallcars.com
just had a look an economy car for 2 weeks will be £244 inc vat and insurance, which works out to £17.43 per day + fuel.
sleep in the car if you're on a budget ____________________ Observation is the greatest source of wisdom. |
