Pffffffff.

Called MCE to see what the damage would be to add pillion cover to my policy and the dirty feks want to double my premium.

when i explained i didn't feel that represented very good value for money, the girl on the phone obviously didn't get paid enough to give a shit.

i told her i would be comparing the meerkats come renewal time.
she still didn't give any shits.

I went with MCE this time round and the difference on my premium for pillion cover was around £10. The lord only knows why they doubled it, it's not like all of the factors they insured you for suddenly double in risk, or that pillion riders cause more accidents.
It just a case of doing the right calculations.

How much is your premium that they want to double? Does the extortionate charge include a 'Policy Amendment Fee' by any chance?

I have had a similar row with my insurer.
I told them that I did not expect any increase in my premium.
My bike has seating for two persons, and I have a full license.
I asked them if they increased car drivers premium if they had passengers and they said no.
I then asked them why they expected to increase my premium if I take a pillion on my bike.
They had no answer Evil or Very Mad
I then asked if I would get a reduced rate premium if I insured as rider only, they said no Mad

Insurance companies, C*nts!

No? They would not reduce my premium if I insured as rider only.
The premium would stay the same regardless of weather I took pillion passengers or not.?..

I honestly can't figure out if you're rage-stroking because the premium when declaring that you'll be taking a pillion is higher, or because it's not higher.

It should be higher.

Cars tend to be driven with passengers (not on commutes, obviously), so they factor that in. Cars that tend to be driven with four aspiring 17 year old rocket surgeons hanging out the windows shrieking drunkenly at Daryyyl to give it some welly tend to cost a lot more to insure.

Bikes tend to be ridden without a pillion. I'd say overwhelmingly so. So the assumption is that you won't be taking one. If you do, that's atypical. It's also a huge risk factor for insurers.

If you crash without a pillion then they're typically looking at some property damage, maybe a whiplash claim from a driver, maybe a claim for your bike. Thousands, tends of thousands at most.

Crash with a pillion - a third party - and they go cartwheeling into the landscape and quadraspazz themselves, and they're into 6 or 7 figures in whole-life care. This came to a head a few years back when a wife successfully sued her husband (i.e. his insurer) for spazzing her on his bike.

So it's surprisingly that cover for pillion use is so cheap. Given how unusual it is, and the risks, I'd expect it to be almost prohibitively expensive. Insurers really don't want us doing it.

i didnt bother to ask much more and will wait until renewal time to see what it will cost then.

I always used to put pillion on, just in case I needed to give someone a backy somewhere... these days I can't even be arsed putting the seat or foot pegs on, so no need in the pillion cover.

And fuck MCE.

Cheaper than?

Insurance prices are all based on statistics about who costs them what from claims.

Which is why there are instances when declaring what security you'll use will make the quote more expensive and why there are instances when fully comp is cheaper than tpo or tpft.

Cheaper than cars where you can potato 3 more rocket surgeons. I admit I can't think of an example of a car that has a ver. with more seats* (maybe a Porsche even though they don't have proper rear seats), but you would have thought if it was a major lodding on policies something like an MX-5 would be a lot cheaper to insure.

* maybe a people carrier?

For me, pillion cover on both bikes cost me a fiver with MCE.

Insurance companies just make numbers up out of thin air.

Says who - I've had 2 grown adults in the back of my 911. Admittedly they were chicks, young and flexible with flowy skirts that don't restrict movement nor visuals, but they fitted in there fine. Wasn't any room to do anything with them afterwards though which was a pity.

MX5 checklist:
Sports car - check.
Susceptible to Malicious Damage - check.
Susceptible to Theft - check.
Compromised structure and occupant collision protection - check.

People carriers are generally loaded (ie a 7 seater Volvo will be loaded over a 5 seater) but in reality not by much and from a low base; the people that buy 7 seater Ovlovs don't tend to stick them into ditches at 2 in the morning.

I'm not disagreeing with any of that Smile, I'm just saying if the potato potential was the biggest factor I'd expect an MX-5 to be a lot cheaper to insure than say a chavtastic Clio 182, of which I'm fairly sure a number have ended up in ditches.
