The problem GOG plc have created, in the name of efficiency, (sic), and more profits, is not employing enough staff to, actually, run the franchise without the staff doing overtime!
Pissing the staff off, when you're relying, entirely, on their goodwill to operate the business, was never going to end well!

But hey ho, as long as the taxpayer can throw more than a few million, every now and then, to the shareholders, who cares, it's only our money being wasted! Rolling Eyes

The reason the rules need changing, is that if the union can get a conductor to pull a sickie at the last minute, the entire train gets cancelled, making Southern and the government look to blame.

Devil's advocate, what's your proposed solution for this?

Are there laws blocking the train companies from having additional staff, or employing contractors on short notice to cover this sort of thing? If so, that sounds like it needs sorting out.

I can't see how you could ever fix it otherwise unless we put guns to the heads of staff or something daft.

What makes it different from a supermarket closing if too many staff are sick on the same day? I'd always assumed whenever you see a manager working shopfloor they're covering.

What does any business do when a key man is sick/resigns on short notice/whatever?
