...yesterday, i was so happy at having the bike dynoed at a favourable 22.7bhp (nsr125) that I decided to celebrate by giving the bike a meticulous once over. all the panels came off, the subframe etc, and everything was cleaned inside and out. I even went as far as to clean the plug, change the gearbox oil and polish the cylinder head. Put everything back together and admired my handiwork - later I cleaned my leathers intent on looking damn good, with my new sparkly st. george wiz sliders...
...this morning i'm on my way to work, gleaming lid, and leathers, patriotic sliders getting closer and closer to the floor, and a gleaming bike shining away in the sun. I'm happy as larry, until....
....BANG something whacks my right boot - my first thought is "ive hit something!" and I look in the mirrors expecting to see some debris or dead animal or something, but there's nothing. BANG, something whacks against my boot a second time and I think "is the rearset coming off?!?!?!" I stamp the rear brake in panic just to make sure it's there, and it's solid as a rock. I look down and see something black whacking against my boot. "Sh*t" I think, "I've somehow smashed the lower panel and it's coming off!" but that wasn't it either.
I take a few quick glances while I try not to run off the road and realise it's the clutch cover access panel flapping about in the wind. Bugger! I thought I tightened that up!!! I slow down as the transit behind starts gaining on me and the access panel continues flapping about in the wind. As I look in my mirrors, the banging stops and I see the access panel fly towards the transit, looking like something out of a world war 2 film, flittering and floating behind me as if the bike had been shot.
The access panel disappears round the side of the transit, and If I wasn't already breaking the speed limit when it flew off, I definitley am now. I get up to the top of the hill and scream round the roundabout doing a frenzied U turn, almost christening my sliders, and scream back down the hill. Ilook over the stretch of road where it flew off, but it's not there - run over or otherwise.
I make another pass back up to the roundabut, but it's not there. Fortunatley, there's no sign of it having hit anything either, which i'm bloody relieved about because it wasn't exactly slow debris.
I get to work and see that i've now got a hole in the side of the bike, a foot across, where the access panel's missing. It doesn't look bad, but it will look better with a replacement. Well, I guess I've got to buy myself a replacement access panel.
Still, it made the journey interesting . ____________________ https://www.bikepics.com/members/nsrandy/96rs250/ My Bike!

I know how scary that can be. Especially when i was on an offroad course, littered with trees, bends, mudpatches and hidden ditches. It turned out my brake pedal had loosened off and flew to a behind position, i had (and still have) no front brake, it was probably the scariest thing ive done yet on my bike. Luckily i knew how to run down the gearbox and a handy little hill to stop on. Has anybody ever been hit by something on the motorway? Its gotta hurt. ____________________ Will work for petrol
