So, I was ragging the engine so that a space opened up in the middle of the two lane road (as I'm inclined to) and when I dropped the revs, the engine was making a pronounced knocking noise.

I have no plans to fix the fucking whore-bitch, but I thought you would all like to do a bit of armchair autopsy.

Along with the knocking noise (and feel), which was largely in time to engine speed and not bike speed, there was no real loss of power like if you lose a cylinder. Bear in mind I was in traffic, though.

The clutch was working fine.

Engine temp seemed to be high.

It was clearly terminal, so I didn't bother stopping and rode it until it died, leaving me about 200 yards to push it to the works carpark.

What do you reckon died?

Her dark powers are far reaching.

My armchair guess.... the big end had been starved of oil. Possibly for some time.

I reckon a shell bearing has decided to double up with it's twin.

It's never run low on oil. I have, however, been running 20w50 in an attempt to keep up with it's appetite.

It's getting a proper flogging right here though.

Not sure how many miles on the engine but my 1990 FZR1000R has 58k on the clock with no gearbox problems. Is this something that I have yet to experience?

There are three FZR1000s of one sort or another owned by members of my bike club with no second gear. One of them has just been rebuilt as a racebike with undercut dogs on the gears.

A lot has to do with clutchless shifts into second gear wheelies. So if you're not doing that, it's probably why.

Google FZR1000 second gear and see how many hits you get of bikes either missing it altogether or jumping out of it.

What next? A Mk1 R6?

GPz305?

Some manner of Moto Guzzi or MV?

Maybe just buy some billet aluminium and occasionally machine some off so you can sprinkle the shavings on the garage floor?
