Sooo, as the titles says. I may be travelling 240 miles to Plymouth to pick up a Lexmoto Venom SE 125. Sorted out a good deal and just wanted to pick it up and sell it for more. Pretty good with bikes now so if anything needs fixing I'll do it, there are no problems he says. Now. Its 240 miles out, The two options I've got are:
- Hire a van and take it home. (Costs me roughly £150)
- Take the train there and ride the bike back. (Costs me roughly £50)

I'm thinking about doing option 2. Opinions?

What sort of profit do you really think you'll turn on it, assuming all goes well?

This bike costs 1/3rd of what it is new. So I can get at least £1000 for it.

Lol, apparently most of my ideas that have been posted here have all been bad, but they've turned out alright. Give me reasons why this is a bad idea please.

Buy a return train ticket, it costs about quid more. You will find it a lot easier to back out of anything when you get there.

Risk and reward.
If everything goes to plan, you would hope to buy a bike for £500 and sell it for £1000.
Costs of train and fuel £50 plus eating out for the day £15 = £65
Insurance costs? I'd guess no less than £100 for the fucking about it will cost you to get it put on then taken off your policy.
It's then got to be taxed, not a lot but it counts.
So that takes it down to around £325 you might make in profit.

Then we have the issue of it making it home safely, it's not like they are known to eat up hundreds of miles at the higher end of the rev range.
They are a cheap little runaround, made in China.

That's not worth the risk of making £325 in a day for me, because:

1, You wont get £1000 for it.
2, You will spend more on it before you sell it.
3, it could very well shit itself 100 miles out and end up costing you more than you could ever make back.
4, You live in London, these bikes are all over the place, check Gumtree and put in stupidly low offers for bikes on there, many people after christmas are short of cash and will take a lowball.

Well, already got insurance so I thought it'd be as easy as 123, just change over the vehicle and that's that. No? Question

This.

Things like this kill me and make me want to buy the bike even more.

Turns out I was a little grumpy last night - my apologies for that; it was PCD. No that's not Post Christmas Depression but Post Cum Depression. Happens after crap sex with wife that you've worked hard to obtain before realising you shouldn't have bothered. Anyway.

The issue I have with this is the saleable or rather not saleable nature of the goods. If people were falling over themselves for these bikes then there wouldn't be a metric fucktonne of them kicking around on eBay pre registered at 1300 quid. That means to make your grand you'd need to buy it for under 300 quid all told. And if it was that cheap and someone wants it the other side of the transaction, then why hasn't someone snapped it up locally already?

Run us through the financials - let's see how realistic it is.

Just buy my CBR 125. Reselling the Lexmoto for £1000 won't be easy.

That's an asking price, they probably won't find anyone dumb enough to pay anywhere near.

With at least a £40 admin fee to take out of your profits.

There are loads of learners after cheap 125's and lots of breakers after really cheap ones to sell parts of to the learners. So if this one is sat there mega cheap it's for a reason.

If it was a bike with actual resale value, and there was a reason for it being cheap (mates rates, shitty ad/description etc), then fuck yes, 240, even on a 125 is a piece of piss. Boring, but not particularly challenging. You would have to be sure your insurer has staff available to answer the phone, change your policy, and charge you accordingly.

But to do it for a Lexmoto that's undeen, and of unknown quality? Fuck that.

Risk vs reward. Lots of risk (Fucked lexmoto, courtesy of noob that knows nothing) vs reward (you *may* make a profit, if nothings wrong with it, which is unlikely).

Got AA/RAC with home recovery? "Break" something that's cheap and easy to replace and travel back in a warm truck. Mind you, in the time they'll take to come out, you could have ridden home anyway, and you'll have to make small talk for 4-5 hours.

Just out of interest, how long do you think it'll take you to ride back avoiding motorways?

I don't go massively far out to look at bikes because you want to be able to walk away, and f**k doing 240 miles at this time of year (we aren't all Bodyguard). On a lovely summers day it would still be f'ing boring on a 125. I also have my doubts about the resale value.

I think the reason it's cheap is because the guy doesn't know much english, his description is poor and I had to speak to his brother just to confirm the dates. The owner of the bike is a family guy and he's going on holiday in January and has nowhere to leave it parked so thats why he's selling it and on top of that he wants to get his driving license. He /seems/ like a nice guy and I think it will go all good tbh. I've found a cheap van hire only £43.50 including DVLA charges and £100 (refundable) deposit. So not as expensive as i thought of £150! If it's not good. We leave, simple as. Of course I'll give it a test run and all that. Its for sale for £500.
