Hi folks,

First off im a tech dinosaur so bier with me.
I have been given a Go-pro session for crimbo this year and cant really decide how to mount the thing.

Ill be honest i would like to front mount it but dont have a great deal of chin bar space on my lid due to vents.
Side mounting seems pretty easy but really thats my second choice.

Any advice and pics of your setup would be greatly appreciated Smile

Im not looking to be the next big thing in vlogging Laughing just wanna do some general filming when im out alone/with friends now i have the thing.

Thanks

Side mount will be your best bet. Mounting it on the bike usually ends up in very shaky footage.

Those vents are probably little more than styling features, on the chin piece is best option if possible.
You want it just high enough to be able to see red light is on.
You might even be able to use the vents with cable ties for a sort of ghetto mount to try it.

I have a gopro but don't like it as a helmet cam - the battery life is too short.

Mounting options and their suitability vary from helmet to helmet, what one do you have? That being asked it's as simple as getting either a curved or flat mount and placing on the helmet and pressing against the mount to see if, at any point on the chin area, you can get a complete and sealed fit with no gaps between the mount and the helmet.. can be done for testing purposes with paper, so the mount doesn't stick, in place (that's the paper that comes attached to the mount). The idea being that if there is a gap then the mount will come away from the helmet and loss of camera mid ride, at some point, so gaps between helmet and mount are a no no.

If you can't find a space on the chin area then go for side mounting. I've got a regular sized gopro side mounted and don't even notice it's there although that being said I've never done much above 40-50 with the camera in place so can't comment about drag at higher speeds and so forth.

So that you don't get wonky footage they'll be some jiggery pokerry involved. I hooked my gopro up to my phone and adjusted the various mounting arms on the side mount until something that had a flat surface, a T.V, appeared dead straight on the gopro app while I had the helmet and camera on looking at the T.V. Eyeball straight is not footage straight so you'll need to adjust for the first couple of uses.

My biggest hate with gopro is that the clip that goes into the sticky mount is weak and snaps, more so in cold weather I think, and for that reason I always leave the case, side mount and clip etc (all one piece) connect to the helmet at all times now. Talking of which one side of the clip is actually semi-broken and I'm leaving it attached for that reason.

I find 720p prolongs battery life but still provides decent footage for anything but Hollywood's finest blockbusters standards, 720p 60fps. 2 hours approx is more than enough for I.

Don't think I've missed anything.

I found the I can mount it to the front left ish of my helmet, then if you insist the extension can more or less place the camera centered I think, but front left ish seems to be good for me, doesn't get in my view, but I can also see it in my peripheral vision, which is comforting.

I chin mounted my SJ1000 with cable ties fed through the vents. Viable?

Was thinking of getting a go pro or similar but I've been watching YouTube vids and they seem to turn people into self righteous gobshites.

Can see the advantage in having one but the way people act going off what I've seen I'm a big enough twat without one.

I wear one. Everywhere. If we had them when I got banned, I wouldn't have been banned in the first place, and someone would have lost a job.

I've yet to turn into a pretentious gobshite. I don't vlog or any other bullshit like that. It's a dashcam as far as I'm concerned. I hopefully don't need it, but the odd time I have, it's generally cut short what was looking to be a nasty argument. That said, I'm 6' 3" and not afraid of voicing my opinions, with or without a dashcam. They are a double edged sword. When some twunt overtook me close enough to have me think I was going down, the police wanted the whole card, as is, untouched. If you exceed the limit regularly or by much, filter aggressively, then it may not be worth incriminating yourself, it's all caught on camera.

OP - I sidemount on the left, level with my eyes, because I have a dirty great central vent on the chin. I've not noticed a difference in catching wind etc. Standard Go-Pro 1/2/3/4 shaped action cam in a housing.

Thanks, ive had a look at side mounting and cant seem to get the angle right due to the contours of mu lid (HJC IS17) so ill grab one of those go-pro swivel ball joins and go from there. As with the last guy its little more than a dash cam for me im not going to be uploading to youtube Wink

Thanks all

I have a gopro 4 which I've mounted on top of the helmet. Granted I look like a teletubby but this makes the best use of the wide angle lens.

Some people say that there is wind resistance at higher speeds but I've had no issues up to 90mph which is fast enough for me. Having said all this the Session is quite small so you could mount it on the side of the helmet which would be more discreet.

I never tried the chest mount because I assume the speedo would be in plain view which I did not want on video.

Not a great pic but due to the vents I need to mount off centre and then use small joints to get the front position. Rather than using the GoPro thumbscrews to attach the joints together I used some M5x20 bolts just using one thumbscrew to attach the GoPro itself...Seems to work OK.

I'm a fully fledged helmet cam twat. I switched off the flashing lights so nobody knows if it's on or off. It's always on.
