hi all.
i have a z750. brought a tail tidy for it in the last year.
it came with an led number plate light which was fantastic for about a month.

replaced it with led number plate bolts. after a month one started flashing. contacted the seller who sent out a new pair. now the other ones flashing.

i dont use the bike a massive amount but its doing my head in swapping over lights and connecting them up all the time

is there any decent led ones which wont break. or an old style one with a small bulb in there

many thanks

I fitted a crappy little LED one to my CBR, but on the day of the MOT it wasn't lighting.... the examiner said it wasn't needed anyway

If the taillight is over the numberplate, just drill a hole in the bottom of the lens and put a blob of epoxy over it.

I've considered using a bit of optical fibre routed from the taillight housing to the numberplate lighting point in a similar way. You could build that idea and flog it on ebay. Just send me a percentage.

It's one of those strange things if it's there then it should be working to pass an MOT but if it's not there you won't fail but then under the lighting regs you could be pulled by the popo for not having one.

Can you replace the leds in the tail light unit? I've used a simple flat smd panel in my number plate light. Nothing fancy but it still works a few years on.

There's noting in the MOT tester's manual about number plate lights and no reason to fail a bike if one is either missing or defective. So, it shouldn't fail an MOT.

BUT... (my emboldening):

The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 state:

The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 wrote:
24.—(1) Save as provided in paragraphs (5) and (9), no person shall–

(a) use, or cause or permit to be used, on a road any vehicle which is in motion–

(i) between sunset and sunrise, or

(ii) in seriously reduced visibility between sunrise and sunset; or

(b) allow to remain at rest, or cause or permit to be allowed to remain at rest, on a road any vehicle between sunset and sunrise

unless every front position lamp, rear position lamp, rear registration plate lamp, side marker lamp and end-outline marker lamp with which the vehicle is required by these Regulations to be fitted is kept lit and unobscured.

So you are committing an offence if you ride or park the bike on the road when dark, or in bad daylight visibility, if the number plate light is out.

Ride in the daytime with no fog, mist or bad rain? You're golden.

Oh, herro.

Not quite.

No person shall use, or cause or permit to be used, on a road a vehicle unless [every rear registration plate lamp] is in good working order [and] clean.

Ah, but what if one isn't fitted?

Schedule 1, Table II says that a rear registration plate lamp is mandatory.

What sort of lamp?

Bearing a marking designated as an approval mark by regulation 4 of the Designation of Approval Marks Regulations and shown at item 50A of Schedule 2 to those Regulations

Schedule 2 seems to have been superceded out of The Motor Vehicles (Designation of Approval Marks) Regulations 1979 by one of the many, many amendments, but section 4 suggests some ECE-bollocks.
