I realise this is better placed in the Scotchland forum, but given the fervent and thorough shafting being applied to learner bikers I thought I'd bring it to the attention of a wider audience. Application of negative karma to be applied at your discretion.

But...

Has anyone else (in Scotland) spotted that the new Queensferry Crossing completely shags anyone on L plates riding a 125cc machine who may at some point in their day want to cross the Forth Estuary?

I hadn't realised until today that the new bridge will be a continuous stretch of motorway (M90) from Edinburgh to Dunfermline so no learners allowed. You would expect that anyone on L's and a 125 could continue to use the existing bridge, but for reasons way beyond the scope of a rational mind the existing Forth Road Bridge will be used for pedestrians, pedalists, public transport, and mopeds with a capacity of "less than 50cc". Err, you wot?!

This is not remotely a new revelation (turns out Visor Down flagged it back in 2014) but it's certainly not something I was aware until now.

This will of course affect baby cagers too until plans to allow them on Motorways come to fruition but - meh - they're getting their special dispensation in due course so it's hard to feel too aggrieved about that.

So a 30 mile each way diversion to Kincardine on a wailing 125 is the only alternative?

Have to say I'm proper flabber and a whole lotta gasted. What spacker approved this nonsense?

Same thing on the Severn Bridge. Mopeds can use the pedestrian route - everything else uses the road, and the road is Motorway regs so a no-go for learners.

Doesn't affect me now I have a big bike licence, but it was a pain getting from Bristol to my mate in Newport!

Learners can use the old Forth bridge until it falls down.

BMF and MAG both claimed credit for that. Rolling Eyes

And they'll probably blame the bikers when that happens.

If you ask Fisty nicely, he'll tell you about how he's ridden his TL down the pedestrian bit. I met Smiler on the Welsh side after he'd ridden down there on his 125 as well.

If I can pass my bike test then anyone can, I don't see this as an issue.

Just pass your test, learner bikes aren't much fun.

Huh. So much for my researching skills. To be fair Transport Scotland's FAQs (last updated in June last year) still say only 50cc peds are allowed, which is where I stopped reading and clambered up on me soap box.

Seems a bit much considering it hasn't actually fallen down yet.

For the majority I agree this would probably be more logical, not for myself.
I have no need of a car, the 'downsides' of biking don't concern me and a car would cost me more in general, waste of money.

Plus I recently found the joys of filtering, my commute would be tripled if I was in a car.

Why was it a pain, I've used the footpath on the old Severn bridge via my 125, I know others that have been across on bigger bikes as well including 1000cc.

The bike test consists of.

Some simplistic multiple choice questions that are practically impossible to get wrong, the watching of a video and clicking a mouse when a child is about to run out to an ice cream van on the other side of the road.

A bit of a spin around a car park with a few cones and then 30 mins on the road not riding like a dxck.

Just do the above, then you can ride on whatever road you want and not have the shame of Looser plates.

MAG at least had some rage-rides over it, so they did their part to hasten it along.

Because in an attempt to at least look like a law abiding citizen I had to ride along the path at moped speeds Wink

It's near Edinburgh, they have a no-pursuit policy. Or more specifically, a "whit dae you expect us tae dae aboot it?" policy. It's the perfect crime.
