Can I ask a n00b question please?

Looking to get an entry level DSLR and learn awesomeness.

Can't decide what to buy.

The Canon 100d is like 3 years old but all round well regarded. Only thing putting me off is battery life is supposedly not very good.

The Nikon 3300/3400 seem better on paper but feel plastic and larger.

I've held them both and prefer the Canon. But if I buy it and they release a new one with a good battery I'll be pissed. Laughing

I'm guessing I can't really go far wrong, but is there anything you boys would advise to a noob like me?

Guessing the difference is a bit like Yamaha/Honda.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Battery grips help.

As for the rest, Canon Nikon is pretty much the Honda/Yami argument. Nikon slate Canon owners, and vice versa. Ultimately though they are both very good products.

On paper the Nikon is the better camera. Most of my friends swear by Nikon, better sensors for some styles, more focus points, more megapixels and according to some, better colour rendition. But Canon are very user friendly, lenses are a shade cheaper for the most part, its only when you get into L series lenses where you end up spending silly money.

My advice, buy what ever one you feel more comfortable with and buy the best level you can afford. You will end up spending a lot of money on lenses and then upgrading bodies etc. Sticking to one brand means lenses are transferable for the most part.

I started with a Canon 700D which is, if I recall, the same firmware in the 100D with the touch screen etc. The cameras are very similar in most things. I love mine, I still use it as a second camera body. A very good camera to learn wth.

Get your arse down to Portsmouth one evening and you;d be welcome to have a play with the thing and a few lenses.

Another factor you might consider is whether any family or friends have a DSLR with some lenses you might borrow. When you buy a body you are buying into that lens mount, so if you end up with a couple of extra lenses you generally then stay with that manufacturer for the next body, and the next, and so on.

I first used a Nikon in 1985. Still do.

Its a fairly important decision to make simply due to once you start you will find yourself buying more lenses / accessories and it becomes harder to jump ship to another brand. I shoot Canon, always have and for the foreseeable future always will as i have built up a fair amount of kit.

Bodies come and go and do not really hold value, the investment is in the glass, the lenses don't change as often. All of my lenses are from Canons L range apart from my Macro which there is not much of a difference between the non L and L lens.

A lot of things are over priced when it comes to the world of photography but i would still stand by "buy cheap, buy twice".

My first Canon was the XTI Rebel and a few years later im using Canon 5DSR & Canon 6D mostly.

One last tip when it comes to editing - LESS IS MORE especially when you first start. The web is filled with toxic green grass or nuked skies and it hurts my eyes so please think when editing. Wink Thumbs Up

Much choice, such options.

Couple of things to look at, lenses is quite a biggy - bodies will be replaced as they age.

The sensor in the 3300/3400 is a powerhouse for an entry level camera it really is, a sony 24mp one that is the same in the next two models above. As a camera it's pretty shit hot for the price if you know what you are doing/learn the ropes. The canons are ok but their sensors up until the recent 80D were poor, same hardware used for years with newer processors.

Pentax have some great lower end cameras too and glass options plentiful.

My advice though is that DSLR's are, save a few use cases getting outdated, mirrorless is where it's at, access to unlimited lines of glass and a lot of them have a very impressive feature set at a low price.

So I would say look towards Sony & Fujifilm, look for some cheap vintage lenses for pretty pictures and get one or two af lenses for bread and butter shooting. The Fuji system is particularly good value, they repeatedly upgrade firmware and their support is fantastic in a world of belligerent companies. Models worth a punt are XE-2, XT-1 (both of these used are reasonable from somewhere like Wex) and the XT-10.

Has anyone tried drone photography? I'll get some pics together and you can critically analyse them guys, if possible. It would help us no end to have views on where we could be doing better. Being technically correct with drone technology does not make us good photographers. Smile

Never tried it myself but surely the only thing drones are good for is getting higher angles on things that you can't easily get a high angle for.

Relating to the Scotland snaps I posted above - a drone would have been fantastic for going just a few 10s of metres higher than ground level to remove that big lump of ground at the bottom of that first mountain panorama shot.

Aside from high-angled stuff, I've always seen drones as being more for getting video footage, flying alongside things and the likes, or for getting the video version of panoramic shots.

Seen some magnificent mountain photography using drones. If you watched the mountain episode of Attenborough's last series, it gives an idea of what is achievable I think. Could have taken many marvellous stills from that filming.

Flying camera!

Drone is a DJI S1000 fitted with a Zenmuse Gimbal and X5R Camera.

Our website is first draft and definitely a work in progress. The photos are too large for the website etc etc

https://www.ims-uav.com/home.html

Please feel free to advise and critically rip to shreds the photography.....as long as you have some advice hehe

3D modelling using pix 4D is interesting. As is thermal camera inspection and it's uses.

Multi-spectral cameras for crop management is also another potential target area.

Boys with toys really! Laughing

I don't think so. I think it has the potential to be a powerful tool in a photographer's arsenal.
Looking forward to seeing more of your results, and how they develop as you get the hang of it Thumbs Up
