I've polished off about a third of the bottle tonight, it's been thoroughly enjoyable. I've also managed to get my mitts on a miniature bottle of Johnnie Walker Black Label so will give that a go tomorrow.

I drank the Johnnie Walker lat night - the first sip was overwhelmingly TCP-like, I suppose that's the Talker in it but by the end I was disappointed to have finished it. Would definitely consider buying a bottle.

Tried the Haig Club miniature. Was bit meh. Bearable with a touch of lemonade in it.

Tried Monkey Shoulder. Could drink all day without lemonade Laughing

I'm currently enjoying a second bottle of JW Black - I should have bought something else after the first one but it was on sale and I knew I liked it.

I had bought tickets for a whisky event, like a beer festival for whisky but the mate I was supposed to be going with has dropped out and no other mates like whisky. I was looking forward to going and trying out some drinks from different regions and seeing what I liked. Oh well.

Black label is good value. I also enjoy it. Very smooth with just a hint of smoke.

i like the bottle design of the JW range.
even the JW red looks nice even if it is firewater.

the green label is a favourite of mine, I prefer it to the blue which whilst good is over priced/hyped imo.

they also do a "swing" which I'm quite fond of, comes in an unsual seafaring style bottle that can rock back and forth, like I tend to after a few Laughing

black is a good entry level all rounder, not a fan of the red

After polishing off a couple of bottles of JW Black I thought I'd better broaden my horizons. I cracked open my bottle of Glengoyne 17 and while I enjoyed it, there was something about it that I couldn't put my finger one that made me shelve it and I'll come back to it another time.

I went to hell on earth (Tesco) to get a bottle of Aberlour 12 as they had it on offer. Got there to find the shelves practically empty of decent bottles, just the likes of Bells etc left. Not wanting to leave empty handed I left with this

Very, very easy to drink - but dare I say it, a bit boring but still very enjoyable.

My son bought me a bottle of Glenlivet Founder's Reserve.

I'm not really sure why as I've always been a Rum aficionado. Laughing

Is it a good whisky? I know he drinks some boggy peaty stuff from the Western islands that tasted like soil dissolved in alcohol. Sick

I can't drink anymore Crying or Very sad

I'm wondering whether it's one to give to someone I like or someone I don't like. Laughing

Give it to someone you don't like Thumbs Up
Out of all the glenlivets it's probably my least favourite

I do like that. Think my Mrs has bought me a bottle but is keeping it hidden Laughing

It's not bad; not offensive at all, but nothing exciting. I prefer the 12 generally, and in fact I'd prefer the 12 to the 15 really.

It wouldn't make a bad gift if that's what you mean. Usually on the Supermarket shelves for circa £25.

Several things to note:
If you drink a bottle of blended in one sitting it will give you the mother of all hangovers next morning, I have on occasion polished off a bottle of single malt in a single sitting and not felt like death warmed up the next morning. Laughing

Personally, I like to add a dash of cold water which 'opens up' the flavour. Ice on the other hand will 'shut down' the flavour and you might just as well drink piss.

Caol Isla's are my favourite but any Islay will do, for some bizarre reason Speysides give me screaming heartburn so I don't go out of my way to drink them but if that's all that's on offer...

A good way to try different whiskies is to go to a pub that has a reasonable range, but just pop in for the odd one or two at a time as downing a fair few in one sitting will cloud your judgement/memory and empty the wallet. Laughing

Picked up this little lot

https://i.imgur.com/IQYbBXJ.jpg

Trying to get a feel for the different regions.

The Old Pulteney came out top, followed by the Benriach and the Auchentoshan.

The Ardbeg went down the sink. I was really disappointed as was looking forward to tasting something smoky but it just tasted of burnt rubber. Maybe I should have gone for something less smoky?

I know, very disappointed. I drank it last as well knowing it was going to be a different taste but having read reviews online was massively looking forward to it. I just couldn't get past the burning rubber taste.

Give it away don't pour it away! Ardbeg is a good whisky. If you don't like that then you won't like Laphroaig either.

Sounds like you've discovered you don't like heavily smokey and peaty whisky. I'd suggest trying something like an aberlour 12 instead

Shocked
After first trying it in a hotel recently, I have to say Ardbeg has become my choice of Whiskey.

Try a Laphroaig Quarter Cask. Similar and nicer than the laphroaig 10.

Went to Tesco to pick some up as the website showed it was on offer, get there and they didn't have it so came back with this instead

Now this is a peaty whisky I can drink - sweet initial flavour with a long smoky finish, slips down a treat.

The highland park is a much more subtle peat and smoke finish, combined with the honey sweetness, makes it a more palatable option for some. Great choice
