It's very cold out, so I'd like to know what is your way of keeping your hands warm when riding? What have you found works best? My cheap "thermal" gloves are crap so I thought I'd hear your thoughts

Muffs + heated grips = unlined summer gloves. I had to switch the grips off a few times this morning, too toasty.

Sit on your hands? Good heated grips are good. Wire them in so they switch off with the ignition though

When I used to ride an air/oil-cooled naked bike around North London (Yamaha XJR400) on the coldest days I would put my gloved hands on the engine at traffic lights. With my chest on the tank and both arms dangling I probably looked like I'd passed out but it gave a brief respite.

I've just bought two sets of the Tucano Urbano Muffs - the big polyamide ones for my larger bikes and the smaller neoprene ones for CG since it doesn't have bar ends and I don't trust it to run heated gear well over my short commute.

So far I've only tried the neoprene ones. For all they are a bit loose compared to the bar end mounted ones they don't press on the levers and aren't too invasive. I got used to them fairly quickly and my (albeit very well used) winter gloves fit no bother. They've been fine on my short ride to work in heavy rain but I've not tried them on a long enough ride to really comment on them properly yet.

Heated gloves are proper luxury. I've used the Gerbings ones in a microlight a few times and found them great. If they work well in that application they'll be fine on the bike.

The muffs do look a bit shit but I can't say I'll care when I have nice warm hands. Heated grips are great also but if riding longer distances or on motorways your hands will still get cold without something to block the wind.

Bought some waterproof ski gloves a few years ago and they've done me fine for years. However this winter I'm doing a 1-hour commute so have upgraded to bar muffs. Bought some for a tenner on ebay. No problem so far; hands never cold.

You're a bit late to the party. We had a flurry of three - four of these threads pre christmas.

Inner gloves and normal riding gloves is my attempt. Every glove has a limit and if it's cold out then unless I'm already at work I tend to think twice about taking the cover of the bike because can't be arsed.

I've used disposable nitrile gloves a few times under my bike gloves, kept them dry and not cold, plus I get the gloves free from work.

Years ago, all year round commuting Oxford-LHR and daily courier work - muffs, and home-made heated grips. So long ago can't remember the make-up of them but suffice to say I made them out of an electric fire element from some plans off a forum.
Current ride I think may struggle to maintain grips although the alternator is a claimed 190 watts @ 5000 rpm. As yet I have to obtain a metal headlight unit so that I can use a 60/55 bulb without melting the Chinese plastic one. The charging is OK with dip and beam selected together of my 35/35 presently fitted bulb but I would have to wire in something with the appropriate load of grips as well to check the charge rate before purchasing grips. Currently I'm using ski gloves I got from Sports Direct - they are quite good and my hands don't get very cold even n temperatures close to zero. No muffs for me on this tiny traffic splitter, the bike is nice and narrow and I want to keep it that way, even though I have advised muffs!

When I'm at a standstill I wrap one (gloved) had around the OHC cover on the engine for about ten seconds. It's almost like the Fazer engine was designed with this in mind.
