Posted: 10:45 - 10 Jan 2017 Post subject: How can I scrap a bike frame? |
|
|
So I bought a bike in bits, genuine from an owner (he'd had it a while), stripped to rebuild and then had medical problems. Still had MOT when I got it, really old bike early 80's.
I only have the frame left, it has no VIN though, I suspect it was tagged but as they'd done some work on the frame and painted it, something has happened to it. In order to scrap usually you take the bike (or what's left) to the scrapyard with V5. V5 is present and in my name. But it must be identifiable.
What is the easiest way to dispose of, it's currently SORN'd? ____________________ Currently: Yamaha DT 125 LC2,Repsol Fireblade, and Bumblebee MSX 125 |

Cut into small pieces, put pieces in the bin!
As it's, currently, Sorn'ed it will remain Sorn'ed forever, (as long as you do nothing about it), end of problem! ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |

Because winding up the DVLA is more fun than being wound up by eBayers?
That said, the potential buyers for that age of bike probably aren't the usual "wil swop hard staffie 4 it" mob.
As far as I can determine, here's the entirety of what the law requires:
The Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2002 S17 wrote: |
Notification of destruction or permanent export of a vehicle
17. Where a vehicle is destroyed or sent permanently out of—
(a) Great Britain; or
(b) Northern Ireland,
the registered keeper shall immediately notify the Secretary of State of the fact and, at the same time, surrender the registration document to him. |

Sorn is perpetual now. If the frame has no identifying marks just lob it. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

AndyCF wrote: | Just out of interest, has anyone got a new(ish) V5 to hand to check if there is still an option / checkbox to tick to mark "scrapped" ?
By "new" I mean one issued in say the last year or so.
I would suspect its not there anymore, the older ones will have it and I would guess you could send it off with it checked and they would probably accept that. |
On my two year old V5, the options within section 9 are:-
You sold or transferred the vehicle to a:-
Motor trader
Dismantler
Vehicle insurer
All the above must sign the document and you should post it to the DVLA!
There is no, official, option available to 'self scrap', (no doubt this ticks a 'green' box somewhere)!
The document doesn't forbid you 'self scrapping' the vehicle, it simply doesn't mention it and there's nothing on the document that gives you the opportunity to indicate that you have 'self scrapped'!
As I said previously, cut into bits, put bits in the bin and SORN it!
I've done it before, there have been no comebacks! ____________________ "Everybody needs money, that's why they call it money!" |
