Halp before my bike sets me on fire...

Bike intermittently fluctuating idles/revs, unsafe to ride.
Orange sparks around end of HT lead as depicted in image.
When touching HT lead shock can be felt - only outside left cylinder affected.
Tried resecuring HT lead connection at point of spark, doesn't appear loose.
Can't see any physical damage to outside of HT lead, however it is entirely possible I've jammed the tank on it when displacing the tank previously, I have far from a delicate touch.
Where should I look for the initial source of the short?
I own a multimeter and know the basics of how to use it.
Is it worth just looking at replacing the HT lead first and foremost? ____________________ The above post is most likely nonsensical.

I would start by checking the resistivity of each plug cap. They should all be in the region of 5,000-10,000 ohms each.If one is open circuit, then the energy from the coil will have to dissipate to somehwere via the easiest path and quite often this is to an adjacent chassis or engine part.
With the tank off and the engine running with the light off, look for where the sparks are jumping from and to.Maybe a dousing in WD40 might cure any dampness in the area ____________________ Just talk bikes. What else is there?
