PostPosted: 15:07 - 30 Dec 2016    Post subject: Gaming PC Home Build Reply with quote

I have got to a stage in life where I can no longer stand playing PC games on a mediocre OEM PC with piss poor FPS.
So I have decided to build myself a gaming PC. I am choosing to build this myself as I can see there are lots to gain in the choices you have and the money you can spend.
This is my first build so I could really do with some advice. I have been looking online for several months about what combinations are good but again the choice of hardware is mind boggling.

So far I have a budget of ~£800 (willing to break this a little bit if the gains are worth it).
I have noticed a lot of recommendations for the I7 Haswell CPU. But with a suitable MB this eats up over half of my budget. I have a suitable case already but I still need to budget for the GPU, PSU, RAM, SSD's and OS etc.
The two top end games I would like to play are BF 1 and FSX.

If anyone has any recommendations, it would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry if it's a bit vague, this is the first time I have really delved into this sort of stuff.

I'd honestly put your money more towards a good GPU than CPU. Being your first build factor in IF something doesn't work. With my first proper build years ago I had a faulty RAM chip (although I didn't know this at the time). I ended up having to pay the company I ordered from to test the cpu, then mobo, then a pal finally let me try the RAM in his PC where I confirmed it was faulty.

Another build I was supplied with a faulty CPU, no problems except I bent the pins removing it (CPU came off with the heatsink) Brick Wall Luckily I bent them back and AMD didn't notice but it's a PITA you can do without.

I don't think the savings with building are really there anymore. Shops normally under-spec somewhere (a crap mobo for example) but consider if it's really worth the hassle.

I just upgraded my ageing system to play bf1 as my old system was built in 2011. I bought a 960gtx4gb in 2015 which i still use, also used my old power supply.
BF1 works fine on high settings.

1 x BitFenix Neos Midi ATX Tower (Black/Black) @ 31.14GBP
1 x Gigabyte Gaming GA-970 Motherboard with USB 3.1 Type A + Type C @ 83.99GBP
1 x AMD FX-6350 Unlocked Six Core Processor 3.90GHz (4.20GHz Turbo) @ 106.50GBP
1 x 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair Vengeance Jet Black Low Profile 1600MHz CL10 DDR3 Dual/Quad Channel Kit [CML16GX3M2A1600C10] @ 85.80GBP
1 x 120GB Kingston SSDNow V300 Solid State Drive - SV300S37A/120G @ 47.39GBP
1 x SanDisk Z410 480GB SSD/Solid State Drive @ 104.34GBP

1080, 4k, or VR? 30fps, 60, 120?

As mentioned you want to budget for a good GPU, but that could be anywhere from £150 to £600 odd quid depending on what you're intending to do!

My biggest limitation is the screen I use, but a 30fps 1080 picture is more than good enough for the girls I go out with.

Next thing to decide is the size you're building to, I wish I'd gone much smaller in hindsight. If I built my gaming rig again id do it in a home theatre pc case, but your needs will differ to mine.

I came across this website as part of a promotion the other day. It's quite good. You pick your components and it'll give you where the best price is, aswell as whether your PSU will be overloaded etc.

What M.C. said. Spunk on a decent gpu. Make sure you have a decent psu and ssd. Cpu is likely not going to be a bottleneck on a gaming rig providing you stay current gen, I'm still running an i5 2500k but with decent gpu its not an issue.

I cba these days so I'd have a system built by someone like scan (they're local to me so I'm a bit of a fanboi) but other system builders are available.

Thanks for all the replies. Alot of those sites really helped.

After looking at a few different options, I think I have an idea of a half decent setup that comes in on budget.

CPU - AMD FX-8350 4.0Ghz 8-Core
MB - MSI 970 ATX
Memory - Corsair Vengence (2x8GB)
Storage - Kingston SSD V300 120GB
GPU - MSI Geforce GTX 1060 6GB

Including PSU and a better CPU Cooler, this comes in at around £770

I will be going over budget when I add up the ancilleries but I am happy so far.

I would avoid AMD CPUs for gaming in general. 8 cores SOUNDS good until you realise it is 8 weakish integer units and 4 FPUs and anything that hits the FPUs hard (like many games using MMX/SSE instructions) performs pretty badly.

Any current model or Haswell i5 would be a better bet. Even the higher end dual core i3 models will arsefuck a FX8350 in gaming.

This deal is a good starting point.

Chuck in ram, mobo, case, psu and storage and you are good to go

I've had my FX8350 for a couple of years now and never noticed any problems with gaming

Your excessive drinking blurs out the stuttering.

Whilst many games will run *ok* on an 8350, you get better frame rates from a dual core intel pentium or i3 CPU on most everything.

Thats before we go into the 8350 being entirely obsolete and being ditched for Zen in the nearish future.

AND with the equivelent i7 intel CPU consuming half the electricity. An i3 uses less than a third and still whips it.

And most things still benefit more from fewer faster cores. Building a gaming system now from the ground up, the core i3 6300 is about the same price as the 8350, whips it in most things barring some obscure video rendering applications and consumes far less juice (thus also allowing for a more modest power supply and motherboard).

Interestingly the 50 quid Skylake Pentium G4400 is about a match for the FX8350.

But you only need 29fps for the cinematic experience Whistle

I've just upgraded my fx6300 which was over locked to 4.5 ghz.
Was paired with a 8gb Rx480
Was getting over 80 fps at 1080 ultra settings in Doom. Fsx was getting 40/50 with dips to 20 fps
Battlefield 1 mostly 60fps with the occasional dip into the 40's on multiplayer high settings.

Medium settings 60-80fps running dx12 still looks stunning at medium.

However since upgrading to a I5 6600k oc to 4.4 ghz I've not seen it drop below 80 fps on ultra.

I'd personally got I5 6400-6600k with Rx480 or GeForce 1060 build or wait till Amd release its new Ryzen processors.

Can probably do a I5 6600k for £900

Intel it is then...

I have just seen a bundle on Amazon for £485 which includes:
I5 skylake 6600K CPU
Asus Z170 MB pro gaming
16GB Corsair Vengence LPX

Haven't decided what GPU just yet but this is a start.

Thanks again for all your advice.

Actually, that'd about 24 frames per second. Wink

That setup will last you 5 years or more. The 6600K is a pokey bit of kit.
