There are a number 20mph speed limit when the lights flash things in my area. By schools and such like. When does the speed limit stop being 20? are they enforceable if they don't have a defined end? What about if they are on at an absurd time, the conisbrough and bentley ones appear to be regularly on in the small hours. Then again one of these is right next to Ed Milliband's office, so perhaps they're on becasue he's wondering around being delusional and a danger to road traffic?

I stick to 20 past schools in these areas, a crime for which gets me tailgated mercilessly, so knowing when I'm supposed to return to 30 is a bonus. Furthermore the scamera vans have been lurking near these of late.

My current understanding is that there must be:

A proper red-bordered-white-circle-20.
Mandatory: https://sherifftechnologies.com/sites/default/files/styles/width180/public/20_0.jpg (yellow background and lights are optional)

(Contrast with advisory: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2016/362/images/uksi_20160362_en_788 )

Repeaters at regular intervals (I believe every 200m)

A Traffic Regulation Order.

I believe that there does not have to be a termination sign unless it's a 20mph "zone", but those aren't temporary. I.e. you should not expect to see these:

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2016/362/images/uksi_20160362_en_268 or https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2016/362/images/uksi_20160362_en_269

On the strict enforceability, you'd be arguing that the signage was wrong, or there wasn't a repeater, or that there was no TRO.

If there's a Speed Tax van lurking, I'd keep it to 20 just to avoid the hassle. Although I'd note that if you're being properly tailgated, how are they going to snap your plate? Wink

Theres another one, but a slightly different design to the first mandatory sign Roger posted. Rather than 2 sets of 2 lights it might just have 1 set of 2 lights flashing...

As far as i understand those ones out of the zone as soon as you passed the school grounds.

Round here you only see the (/) signs when you leave the village going back to 60mph.

It's the white signs, which would explain why so few people bother with them.

They often put the sign changing the speed limit back again on the oither side of the 20 limit signs.

If there aren't any, I take the limit of the restricted area as being between the two restriction signs. When I pass the one instructing oncoming traffic to drop to 20, I go back to whatever it was before.

That's what most police/advancrd driving/riding instructors will tell you tell do when there's no sign to show the end. Use the sign for oncoming traffic or the road markings for same.
