Not to bother you with details:
New PC case - HDD at 42°C (when in use) - used to be 37°C in my old PC case.

Should I be worried or trying to get more fresh/cold air over the HDD? The internet gives some very contradictory ideas about what the ideal temperature of a HDD should be.

*SSD (C:\ = being powered on 100% of the time) mounted above it, runs at about 32°C.

Mine is currently 37c, and has 30,001 hours of powered on time according to Crystal Disk Info Shocked Seems to be happy, and that's with a 120mm fan on the low setting blowing onto it and my SSD (which I can't get the temp for). I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Google SSD-Z (yes, I was as surprised as you might be now. They do make SSD-Z, just like the CPU-Z and GPU-Z).

My previous case also had a 120mm fan blowing air through the HDD cage, keeping all the HDDs at 37°C.

EDIT: Checking the app now, the SSD went to 28°C and the HDD is inactive, at 29°C.

My current case, well, see this picture:

If you want to know what it should be find the data sheet for your specific drive. This is for a 15krpm SAS drive but should give you a guide - <30C is too cold, >45C is too hot.

Why are you worrying about a 5c change in temperature? I am sure HDD's operate in places where the ambient temperature is more than 42c. Laughing

With significant detriment to the drives life span. On my wall at work I have a MTBF v's temperature graph for various computer components. There's one thing that's clear every component can be too cold or too hot, HDDs are optimal at quite high temps compared CPUs. However, HDD MTBF fall off is very steep where as a CPU is a very slow gradual fall off.

I see, so what's the purpose of this section, if not for asking computer/technology related question? As I have pointed out, the internet gives out a lot of contradictory info. Confused

As stated above, the manufacturer's data sheet will have very accurate info.

Since you don't believe Cansa. Go read the manufacturer data. See what the people who designed it calculated was the correct range, rather than asking on a motorbike forum. Or even better, just delete all the temperature monitoring programs and just use your pc as a pc.

I tried before I even started this thread. The HDD is 6+ years old, hence can't find anything specific from the manufacturer. The products they sell now should be between 5°C and 55°C or 0°C and 60°C.

Anyway, I'm gonna mark the thread as SOLVED and buy a new HDD when the one I have explodes.

Google and Microsoft have both done studies on disk drive temperature in their data centers. Google found that temperature was not a good predictor of failure, while Microsoft and the University of Virginia found that there was a significant correlation.

Disk drive manufacturers tell Backblaze that in general, it’s a good idea to keep disks cooler so they will last longer.

Just do regular backups if you keep anything important on it, if it dies it dies Thumbs Up My 640GB Western Digital drive is over 8 years old now, still going strong, not used as a primary anymore though, SSD is a must for me now Thumbs Up

Had a few drives fail on me in the past, 2 OCZ 60GB SSD's just when SSD's first came out so shame on me for being a test subject, and a 40GB Maxtor (do they still exist?) which failed after 2 years, started making alsorts of dodgy noises and died a painful death.

What model harddrive?

Also, there's not much air flow across the drives on a define mini c, if using the section where the PSU sits.

So, I had a look around the case and I think I'll be able to fit a fan there OR mount the HDD elsewhere. It'd be a waste to run it at higher temp and shorten its lifespan. Right now the ambient temperature in my room is about 20°C, which is a value I won't be able to maintain during the summer time.

I had a quick peek at the specs of a typical desktop drive, in this case a WD Blue series drive.

Specified operating temperature is between 0 and 60 degrees Centigrade. Thus implying that operation at 42 degrees is within spec and thus only a worry to profound autists.

https://www.wdc.com/content/dam/wdc/website/downloadable_assets/eng/spec_data_sheet/2879-771436.pdf

**EDIT because rhyno is autist**

Found specs for an old ATA100 drive. Still lists 0-60 degrees.

So Lads, seems like the extra heat didn't do well for the old HDD and it's now dead or soon to be. It's randomly crashing and refusing to read/write or even access the drive.

It was so young, only 4 years being powered on, most of the time at nice 37°C, the past few weeks of 42°C killed it. Well, maybe not, but the higher temp. sure did not help.

Now for some questions, I guess. What's cool these days?
I see the actual capacity of the drive doesn't really determine the price anymore. So a Blue WD 2TB, 5400 rpm., 64MB cache it is. Although it's slower by 3 Mbps at read/write than the Blue 1TB, 7200 rpm., 64MB cache version. Any suggestions? I just need a storage.

Do I get it right that less revs = less noise, less heat, lower power consumption?
