Was going to comment on the bids already on the BMW 'cafe racers', but seems even original unmolested ones are going for pretty silly money.

Glad I got the chance to try one when the market had bottomed out (it was sucky Smile ).
Now a bid on a 2 stroke would be temping as I've just sold a bike, but alas money is paying off debts and out of space.

Thing is from reading more road tests of old bikes recently tested against their earlier and later peers, desirable, valuable and rarity are often words that don't equate to best to ride or fastest.

The MC18 does in some ways not look as cool as an MC28 (the valuable/desirable garage Queen one).

But the 18 is lighter, lower geared, and less heavily restricted, along with being massively easier to fully de-restrict too. Its the no brainer best NSR if you want one to ride.

The 28 is heavier, almost impossible to fully de-restrict without spending thousands, and it's a slightly bigger bike too. The 28 is the only NSR to have though if you want it in a collection or in a warm carpeted lounge in front of the TV for looking at.

The RGV's are the same. The VJ23 is not a magical bike and not a pure scalpel to ride compared to a 22, but it's the only RGV that's worth any serious money.

VFR750's the early ones used to be dirt cheap, they are going up now slowly, but IMO it's the only VFR 750/800 that's ever going to be fun to thrash round a track, and they are much more sporty than any VFR since. They also make just as much bhp as a slabbie GSXR, and look a million times more modern and massively less ugly. But the GSXR is worth a fortune for a bike that ain't going to go any better or look as cool.

The days of NSR's being hard to detestrict is long gone. Simply change stock ECU for a Zeel or Ignitech one. No need for an expensive HRC CDI and wiring loom. Obviously you lose the smartcard functionality on the MC21 but meh.

RGV I would like I think.

I'd really like a nice conditioned KMX more than anything though, but it's just to wheelie down memory lane on more than anything.

I think the MC21 had a bigger heavier frame and thicker swingarm. The MC28 would have quite obviously been heavier having a fashionable if not better for handling single sided rear end.

Blue makes a good point about the electronics and de-restriction being possible now with aftermarket ignition and ECU's. The only thing with that is if the bike is not a rider and more of a show bike, I'd expect that losing the smart card ignition system would seriously affect the bikes value? An HRC loom and card would be the holy grail though, and get collectors spunking in their wallets in no time.

Theres not many 80's-90's strokers that are still relatively affordable that I'd like these days. The big or collectable stuff is out of reach, and some of the classic 70's bikes that are also now very expensive I'd only want to butcher into a special. Bikes like KH400's, GT750's etc I'd only want to build specials with modern bits, or even just the engines to put into more modern bikes.

Realistically, I'd like the full set of Japanese 125 and 200cc trail bikes, a TDR250, and then I'd like a load of spunky and rare Italian 125's like Benelli's, Cagiva's, and Gilera's. It would be nice to have some really rare stuff like Aspes, Malanca, and Garelli 125's too.

Personally I'm bored to tears with the fitting of modern running gear on 70's bikes (and LC's). They have bendy steel frames, giving them more grip and stiffer forks / swinging arm is only going to highlight that the frame is bendy steel tubes, not stiff bits of aluminium. For me the charm is the relativly basic chassis, chuck on modern tyres and most of them are not too bad. They'll never handle like a modern bike just cause someone sticks an R1 front and rear end on one.

I can see your point there.
I guess some people with a load of modern sportsbike bits sat around and an expensive to restore classic that needs hard to find or repair parts think they are being clever by building a special though.

If it's a question of economics and budget I can see why some people prefer to rebuild a bike as a special. Im with you though on not liking people chucking a load of RGV stuff onto an LC thinking it's better. They should keep it all Yamaha and there's plenty of FZ/FZR bits they could use.

I did like the TDR750 special in practical sports bike magazine though,it was basically a TDM 850 with a GT750 motor fitted.

I'm sorry to disappoint. It ended up with about std TDM 850 power, 75bhp. The GT lump was almost std, the exhausts were custom expansions however.
