I bought a cheap netbook today. Acer Aspire one. It was made in 2009. It was running Ubuntu, couldn't get on with it so I installed Windows 7 home premium with the help of an external DVD drive. Even will all the proper drivers installed it is slow on the internet and slow generally.

It has 2 gig ram and an Intel 1.3 Atom Z520 cpu. Would XP be a better bet or perhaps Linux Mint 18.1?

I just want to watch Youtube, buy and sell on Gumtree and do eBay etc.

Thank you.

Old shit netbook is old and shit, I've got a very similar acer model too, except I've had it since 2009. Very Happy

Yeah mine came with Windows 7 Home "starter" edition on it, stupid MS, quit with all the versions.
I soon stripped it off for XP SP3 and used to dual boot versions of Linux too.

I had one of those years ago. I ran arch Linux on it, it was fine running that. Anything else was very slow. Arch probably isn't the best for a Linux newbie though. Maybe crunch bang if you want an easier but lightweight distribution. There's many more. Fully fledged mint is likely a bit heavy.

Windows wise I'd run xp if I really had to.

Window is a resource guzzler, Linux isn't, this is why people bung Linux on old hardware, to give it a new lease of life. Mint is generally considered the ideal choice for a Laptop so go for it.

ArchLinux is for hard core geeks, or people who want to learn how Linux works the hard way. Installing it is analogous to building a motorcycle from individual castings, nuts bolts and washers, without a manual and not knowing what sort of motorcycle it is.

Arch isn't that bad. I'm far fom a guru but it taught me a lot and I didn't find it too bad. The wiki is one of the best I've seen, although not as easy to follow as it once was. The beginners guide was great.

I don't think mint will run well based on my experience with the aspire one. If you go for mint I'd go for a variant running a lighter DE like XFCE or something. I used fluxbox on top of an earlier Ubuntu for a while and it was OK.

OP does not aspire to guru-ism, will never don the grey beard and knitted Cardigan of a Grand Master, so ArchLinux should be avoided.
Agreed a lighter Mint spin will work better. I'm a big fan of XCFE myself.

Very true hence why I said in my original post that's it's not the best choice for Linux newbies. Mint probably is the best choice but no way it'll run well with cinnamon or mate. XFCE used to be my DE of choice when I was going for open box or a tiling WM. Nice and easy to use but without the bloat of others.

I would add regarding Linux, OP has more than once been vocal about his membership to 'The Old Geezer Club'.
With all due respect I don't think the switch from Windows OS to Linux would be easy for him.

That's a strange one, Vista running better than either XP or 7 Smile I'd honestly stick with Chrome, I've installed it on some utterly useless ancient systems and been surprised how well it runs.

If your still up for trying something better Bodhi Linux runs pretty well on netbooks. It's an Enlightenment desktop running on Ubuntu.

I like Vista. It's Windows, so that's all good. Also it plays that ditty tune on start up that we all love. I've got Pandacloud Antivirus on it now. It's still slower than our desk top, that is an I5 with 8 gig ram.

My Grandad used to like Vista on his old Knackard Packard...
He was also worried that if he pressed the wrong keys he would accidently hack into military computers somehow.

So yeah, I now question anybodies sanity if they like Vista.
