Hey goiz -

Been lurking for a long time (not like the motorvlogger spunk-stain, proper lurking) but never posted.

I ride a yammy ybr 125, commuting daily, going to do ze DAS soon

I want to buy a topbox because its becoming a PITA to gear up fully when going to clients and possibly compromising full gear when going out normally.

I av some concerns though, when I filter, sometimes squeezing through tight gaps and adjusting my bike's frontal position to avoid hitting car/van mirrors. Does having a topbox affect this?

Does topbox affect general riding (apart from a moving chain)?

Anyone fitted one on a YBR? I have a rack but don't know how to fit one..

Depends how wide the Top Box is.

Yes - but not dangerously so unless you overweight the box or as you mention, let the chain rattle around.

on the whole, no

I have been stuck behind BMW adventure dreamers with huge side boxes stopping me filtering on the M25, they could have got through, but were dithering

if you have a super wide box it will be a PITA anyway

unless you is super fatty, if your handle bars get through so will you

Yeah they're annoying, and so adamant that they want to be in front as well! I understand if we on motorway or a clear stretch but we filtering lad, let my wee ybr go first

Thanks, but what if I have to tilt my handlebars to get through on, say, a 35litre topbox, do you think the box is gonna go whack! I'm not fatty..

Really, what you are asking is a question from a lack of experience. Experience will teach you how to filter.

So, slow it down.

If you "whack" a mirror, you might have a verbal disagreement.

If you hit a mirror at warp speed you might be deaded.

You will come across situations where you have to wiggle it a bit to get through, you may or may not decide to do so. If in doubt, don't.

I bought this one for my YBR and returned it as I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to fit it, the metal plates etc were so awkward

Maybe you'll be better at it, but decent value..

first of all not sure you can have business use insurance on provisional licence (may be wrong we were on about it on another thread)

also whats a top box got to do with gearing up

you still have to put the gear on its just some where to put it when you stop

what gear are you storing in the box

I put a 32L box (from CMPO) on my YBR-a-like AJS. Didn't even know it was there, didn't interfere with filtering.

Got an even bigger one on the Bandit. Ditto.

I commute daily in Bristol traffic and I haven't clouted anything yet.

Your Mileage, however, May Vary.

EDIT - Also, I had business use when I was on L's. Wasn't an issue.

It's the cat's whisker scenario. If the widest part of the bike (normally mirrors) gets through, so will the rest. Years ago, when I was despatching in and around London, I never had any bother - even the panniers were no trouble, but they were those nice 'courier' types. The front and rear bikes were mine, the middle one was a mate's (company bike)

I used to have a large topbox on a YBR, no problems filtering.

I filter on the Viff with full Honda side panniers on, you just need spacial awareness.

From my experience as others have said it doesn't really make a difference fitting through tight gaps as mirrors and handle bar are usually the widest parts.

I filter every day with a 45L top box with no squeezing through gaps issues. If I really have to wiggle my mirrors say to get between 2 transits I tend to check my mirrors to make sure I don’t clip them with the box, but that’s only paranoia. If your mirrors, bars and shoulders go through, the box will follow.

The only manoeuvre where I’m always conscious of the risk of clunking someone is when changing from filtering between lanes 1 & 2 to lanes 2 & 3, or vice versa, especially when traffic is stationary and you do a hard turn behind a vehicle in the middle lane. As you lean to turn into your new filter lane beware of how close the top box gets to the rear corner of their vehicle. Particularly if it’s a van or lorry.

Other than that just be careful about too much weight making the front wheel feel light.

I had a box that would take a single full face helmet on my YBR125, commuting in London I didn't even notice it was there.

I've only clipped a wing mirror once with a double helmet topbox, on my CB500. The one on my YBR isn't as wide, not had any hits yet.

Ive used two and fitted another 3 of the 48-62L tech 7 box from ebay. They are all the same size. 30 quid well spent. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400489525952 My old one has done 30,000 miles and survived a couple 4 or so drops - still usable but the lock is starting to get iffy and the reflector coming away. I dont notice it filtering, wish it were 50% taller to fit more stuffs. Small boxes look rubbish and whats the use storing just a lid?!

Note that a box with a recesed/internal handle will eat valuable space and prevent fitting anything but lids or soft shoppig

Recommend securely fitting the box, rather than rely on quick release and weak m5 bolts. This allow carrying heavier stuff and going faster.
Mine has 5 xM8 bolts, box into plate, 6 more plate to rack. Other side of rack I have two halves of a rear sprocket with the teeth ground off. Use threadlock and paint the mounting black.

I have some gaping double-helmet monster on the back of my Nazi Tractor, and not once have I even considered it when filtering. If your bars and elbows go through, your box will go through.

Yes you can have business miles on a provisional, had it on my two first bikes (both 100cc). Was brilliant when the bosses needed a small parcel delivered, especially if on the way home, knock off an hour early, do delivery, get home, get paid and mileage for going home as well! Also ran artwork and proofs around for the company as well, used to get 50p a mile and when your bike does 90mpg that is great!
