Hi everyone,
I went to take my CBT today, and boy did i find it difficult!I am doing a Accelerated Access course and have never even got on to a bike before. It started at 9am and we went to the site to train. The instructor was a great trainer and explained in full how the bike worked and functioned. All was well until i got on the bike.i had no problem in getting it started but found the co-ordination of the clutch, throttle and rear brake all a bit confusing Embarassed .I'm not trying to make excuses but the sun was beating down on me and i forgot my shades which just added to my frustration. The instructor kept on telling me to loosen up but i couldn't for some reason. After staling it numerous amounts of times i sort of got the hang of it,but by the time i did it was time for the other learner to be taken out on the road.By 2pm i was at home crying like a baby but not because i couldnt do it.This course has cost me £600 and after buying all my gear i maxed out my £1100 credit card Crying or Very sad.I am 25 and after getting top marks on my theory i was very confident.Like i say it was my first time on a bike and i have never driven in a car before so i did not have that sense of co-ordination.I hope i pass tomorrow as it will probally be my last chance as my test is on wednesday.

Wenesday's a long way off. Just relax and do as they tell you, and you'll get the hang of it.

I think you mean Direct Access, accelerated access is something different.

You'll get the hang of it easily, everyone thinks exactly the same as you to start with, thinking they'll never be able to get it right, trying to work out how the hell everyone else can do it but you can't.

With a couple of days practice you'll be fine.

It all does seem confusing at first but give it a couple off days off training and you'll be fine.

OK.

The first thing to do, is try to relax about it. Hard thing to do, I know.

Frustration won't help at all and as has been mentioned, a couple of days away from it will calm you down abit.

Don't panic, this is all new to you and believe me it will become easier. When you go back, take your time and don't rush things.

I can easily see how being hot and being blinded is off putting, this added to your frustrations. Take a few deep breaths when you first start again just to calm any nerves.

It might be worth mentioning your problems to your instructor, it's nothing to be embarassed about, I'm sure he's seen it all before and may give you a bit of closer instruction.

Good luck with your lessons. Cool

Nothing to be ashamed about mate - I rode a geared bike for the first time the other day, and stalled the bloody thing about a dozen times in front of 4 little chavs doing their CBT - bloody embarassing, I can tell you! I've got my DAS in a couple of weeks, so I just hired a 125, took the day off work and drove around for about 4 or 5 hours to get used to it. I'll probably do the same thing again a couple more times to make sure I have got the hang of easing the clutch in before I make a fool of myself in my own town! (I was hiring the bike from the feltham area, so spent the day annoying people over that side of the capital)

You soon work these things out, I did my CBT on a scooter, and I almost made a total hash of it, even without having to worry about gears!

Hmm...I went into my first ride on the Gixxer filled with confidence. I'd never ridden a bike before, but had spent the last month or so dreaming about it day and night. The best part was, I didn't kill it once. The throttle, brake and clutch controls all seemed very natural and all the advice I'd gotten on leaning and which way to turn the wheel at what speed helped a hell of a lot. Only after I completed the 75 mile ride back from the dealership did I kill it. At a stoplight. With about ten cars behind me. Rolling Eyes

I think I've killed the thing a grand total of 5 to 7 times now, though none recently. Hopefully never again as I tend to get a bit frustrated and triple-digit speeds ensue. Thumbs Down

The best advice I can give would be to let the clutch out slowly without adding any gas. This should let you get a feel for where it picks up before actually having to give it the go juice. Keep in mind the bike will be moving at this point so you may want to either pull the clutch back in and brake or give it a little gas, depending on the situation. Good luck! Very Happy

Hi Pincher,

Yeah, I made a right f*ck up of my CBT and plan to do it again soon (might even pop out tomorrow as it happens Razz ), Your instructor sounds a lot better than the one I had and its also a bonus that you've got your own equipment as I think that helps a shitload. I went out and bought a helmet the other day and the improvement is amazing, no pain on the back of your head or forehead.

There's some good advice from people in the thread I did which would probably be of help to you. As it's got in there, the thing to get the hang off with a bike is to use the clutch carefully when pulling off and not too much gas. I found a common problem when I was doing it was the bike would shoot off and I'd have trouble controllling it. Basically as long as you've got the clutch in you can rev it as much as you like and it won't suddenly shoot off from you.

Anyway, stick with it and whatever you do don't give up. I know it seems really shit when you keep f*cking up but it'll definately be worth it in the end. Thumbs Up

Do it for yourself is all I can say. Strange comment? well if you had a 125cc of your own and just took it somewhere deserted and practiced you'd have the time of your life! stalling would not be an embarrassment or disappointment as you'd have no instructor......

So our there at the training school, just do it for yourself!
