The specific issue here is that a couple of indie #NTDWI candidates are running their own Stoke-on-Trent-First campaigns. It's too soon for them to make their move, so they're being slapped down in favour of Labour, for now.

In a way it's good that it's out in the open and we can discuss it. It's an open goal for Nuttall, if he wasn't so bumblingly incompetent.
