Local elections: 'I got my first death threat before I was elected'

tl;dr it's all down to Internet trolls, we need to heavily regulate the Interwebs Rolling Eyes

Of course, no mention of the possibility of councillors being accessible proxies for people's grievances against national party politics. No examination as to why in general people are more pissed-off with governments, both local and national. In short, a multi-factor problem but why bother with details when there's an agenda to push? The usual "see this problem [of our own making] give us more power and it goes away" Sad

I could be a local councillor if I wanted (I don't), we didn't even have an election last time because not enough people stood.

So there's obviously something sadly wrong with the job itself and I don't think it's internet trolls. Maybe we need to pay them more so the job attracts professional people instead of drum-bangers, hand-wringers, nest-liners and people with fine arts degrees?

My local councillors are mostly Local Residents' Association and you only ever see them just before an election and then they disappear into the ether. We have one decent councillor who actually does stuff and fixes things - making a real, tangible difference to the local community - but unfortunately he's Conservative. No amount of good deeds will make up for Rishi Sunak though so hopefully he stands as an independent for the next election.
