A mentally ill man who later killed three people was released by medics who flagged the 'over-representation' of young black men in detention, an inquiry has heard.

Schizophrenic Valdo Calocane slaughtered fellow university students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, and 65-year-old Ian Coates in a random stabbing spree in Nottingham in June 2023.

Spoiler: the inquiry will conclude that the decision to detain him or not will have been heavily influenced by the available of beds or lack thereof within that NHS trust rather than whether there was a clinical need to detain him.

For the two weeks he was detained, staff will already have been considering who the bed that Valdo was occupying would be given to if Valdo were to be discharged at the end of the two weeks.

The fact he had previous been detained on four occasions and 'five of his seven mental health assessments recommended detention' illustrates the mental health system has a revolving door.

Hindsight is always 20:20 and nothing meaningful will come of the inquest. Some shit about lessons have been learnt, blah blah blah, many apologies, etc etc etc, donk donk donk.
