Is it really that hard to remember what gear you're in?

Surely you can just take a quick look at the speedo and rev counter and noise of the engine to work out what gear you're in, after you're familiar with the bike.

write '1 2 3 4 5' on a sticky note and imagine the numbers flash.

I've fitted a few and the only ones worth fitting IMHO are GIPro

https://www.healtech-electronics.com/products/gpds/

Plug and play but not cheap. I've fitted them to wifies 650 Bandit and ER6-N and they are bloody good. I tried a cheapy from ebay on the bandit and gave up, sold it on and bought the GIPro.

My bike came with one and it's pretty neat but I never tend to rely on it while riding. I mean you can tell if you're in the wrong gear because the engine struggles. About the only times I will make use of it is making sure I've dropped into first approaching lights or when I'm on a clear road in sixth and checking to see if I've got another cog, which I usually do automatically with my foot anyway.

the 1000 has one anyway as does my car. I find it handy to double check I'm in top on a boring slog.

I do find myself going to check on the triumph or other cars then remembering they don't have one.

would I fit an aftermarket one? no.

my Aprilia had a red light that flashed when I reached certain revs, my XSR has a gear indicator on the dash, does either system affect the way I ride? no

Never owned a bike that has one, never needed one. Strangely enough, my car doesn't have a little dashboard doodad telling me what gear I'm in, same thing!

Gear shift indicator? Or gear indicator? If latter....then as above....you choose.
If former...bloody minefield!

Why would you need one on a car? Confused You've got a big stick with numbers on. I wouldn't mind a gear indicator, only bike I've ridden with one was a POS Chinese bike I did my CBT on, but I can live without it. It would be handy to make sure you've stopped in first, or when you've lost track of what gear you're in.

As for shift indicators why? You normally shift way before the redline unless you're on a tiddler, and in cars they normally want you to shift way too early (so I ignore them).

Mine has one fitted as standard. It is useful for that 'Am I in first?' moment we all have sometimes at the lights. Thumbs Up

Many modern cars tell you the gear you're in and if you should shift up/down to a different gear (the wife's puts an arrow and the gear it thinks I should be in) for economy

Quite funny really, often tells me to shift up just when I'm about to shift down due to it starting to loose pace on a steep hill, I usually respond by obliging it so I can swear at it for being stupid.

on a bike? completely redundant, if the bike is very noisy then it's possibly time to change up a gear. If it's not very noisy then consider changing down a gear
If you let go of the clutch while not moving and it stalls you're not in neutral (light doesn't work)
